Just to be clear, my question is does MLS need to grow? Once expansion is finished, say 32 teams, could the league continue if the TV ratings do not increase?
Things are very different in the TV business than when the other soccer leagues existed so I hope the business model for this one isn't based too much on the past.
Yes, but that's what I mean. Lots of people are talking about those shows but far fewer people are seeing each one than saw an episode of Cagny and Lacy or Dallas. Most episodes of Breaking Bad...
But that doesn't answer my question ;). I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything, I'm just wondering. There have been a lot of changes in the entertainment industry and adjustments have been...
Do you think MLS would continue in the US as the NHL does as a mostly gate-driven league?
I'm just curious, is there a problem being a gate-driven league?
This is a good idea. Cram as many playoff games as close together as possible, make a real event out of it. All TV is heading towards 'binge watching,' that's what March madness is, and other league...
It also shows some misunderstanding about Toronto. The fate of the local team rests almost entirely on the fate of the league - if MLS become s a big deal so will the team in Toronto. If the league...
Or they're making a sitcom about a pub league in Yellowknife. Or a drama, with the CBC anything is possible.
Well, they are kind of watching their grandfather die.
Yes, thanks for that, a good read.
The Ti-Cat insights are interesting. I remember seeing a picture from the 1982 Grey Cup parade in Hamilton of a few guys at the end carrying a banner that read,...
Yes, the CFL and MLS have a lot in common. Likely if it hadn't been for the support of TSN the CFL would have folded by now. Will MLS owners be satisfied with just gate receipts forever?
Yes, and to make it worse, Bell would like to shut down TSN and just carry US sports networks. Not just sports, they don't want to have any TV production in Canada, as you say, it just isn't...
What about the NFL?
You mean the Concordes? ;)
But seriously, TFC isn't a club it's a franchise. That's the root of the issue, there is no "club culture." I wish there was, but this thread shows it's not likely to...
This is true but it does need to be addressed. Not just MLSE but MLS is trying to build something and from the beginning haven't been sure which way to do it. Even though the most successful method...
Sometimes I think this team's entire existence is a social experiment - and I don't like the results so far.
The trend does seem to be more towards the "event" game, the World Cup Final, the Champions Legue final, whatever. More likely the future we be a few big-money teams in a global champions league not...
Have you got a link for this? If it's true, why do they think so differently about this one part of their business as opposed to all the others?
Sure, and making TV shows for CTV is chump change for Bell, an entire season of "Motive" is less than a couple of Maple Leafs salaries but that's not the issue. They still never spend as much as a US...
There is no example in the broadcasting divisions of Bell or Rogers of either of them spending money to retain talent. They never think, "If this show is a huge hit we'll make a lot more money," they...
Yes, the rest will catch up. There will always be competition from other sports. Someday maybe even the Leafs this time of year ;).
But even when the Jays or Raptors aren't doing well the NBa and...
And as the profile of MLS raises so will interest in the team.
Yes, not much respect for the fans. By the way, when was the last time a franchise sold?
