They certainly have come a long way in a very short time. They now boast nearly 3,000
members and have their own media representatives, marketing arm, council of elders and one of the most recognizable logos in MLS.
Now they will soon have their very own section inside a brand new stadium constructed with them in mind.
In what marks perhaps the first time that MLS supporter culture thoroughly enshrined into a stadium construction, we now have this report from the Philadelphia Daily News which states:
" With a membership of more than 2,500, the Sons of Ben, the independent fan club created in 2007 in anticipation of Philly getting a MLS franchise, gets high consideration.
"They've become so relevant that we have had to step back and design an entire section of the stadium for them, including their own entrance," Mosca said. "Based on the number of tickets we already have in-house, it has to be about fan development. To me, that means it is more important to be a service company than a sales company."
Pretty amazing stuff. Of course we had heard previously that DC United's stadium of dreams would have a special section for the Barra Brava, Screaming Eagles and La Norte which would be built with special "bouncy" stands to replicate the bouncing sections seen at RFK stadium, but most of that has been rumor and off the record conversations with Kevin Payne rather than official comments in a newspaper.
Both of these developments should have Red Bull New York supporters wondering what, if anything their organization will be designing around their Empire Supporters Club. We sense some jealousy brewing.
The article also mentions that we should know the club's name and colors by the end of this year.
