Default A lesson to be learned.

Yes we love to hate on Columbus and their few fans and for good reason. However, for the few of you on this board that followed the MLS before TFC, you might remember the Columbus Crew as one of the best supported teams in the MLS in terms of their home attendance numbers. From about the start of MLS in 1996 to about 2003, Columbus was always one of the best attendance wise in the league, regularly getting 16000 to 20000 per game at Crew Stadium. I remember watching many games on satelite tv originating from Crew Stadium , the place was always pretty full. However, after season after season of bad coaching and bad management the fans began to stay away. Moreover, the Crew have learned the hard way that once the fans are gone it's hard to get them back, expecialy when it comes to Pro soccer here in North America where the sport is still considered a minor sport. Let this be a lesson to all teams in the MLS that do get decent crowds to their games, that once they stop coming good luck trying to get them back.

Good post - but unfortunately I don't recognize or appreciate anything that happened in MLS before November 12th 2005.

We're a completely different market from Columbus - a MUCH bigger city, we've got a huge immigrant population who know the game (they aren't just learning about it now), we have ownership that's stable and has experience in the sports/entertainment industry etc.

yup. if only people think of these things before comparing cities. also, the poverty rate in columbus is much higher today than it was back then. smaller population and higher poverty rate will add to lower attendance.

Yes we better watch our step or the draw of University gridiron may bury our MLS fans. Go Toronto State!

You do realize that most of those 'fans' were free ticket give aways and a bunch of soccer moms with their kids and their U 7's select soccer club. They didn't even have a proper supporters group, well they still don't have a proper supporters group but, until about 3 years ago. They are just NOW getting a true fanbase, well bandwagoners, and supporters groups and the supporters groups came together this season because of a stage that MADE the supporters funnel into one area.

On the GO train to a TFC match, a guy from Columbus asked me what team we were all going to watch. I told him Toronto FC, explained that it was a soccer match when he looked puzzled, and also informed him that his city's team was tops in the league,

He had never heard of the Crew.

    Sad... so sad.
MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto

That just comes down to pour marketing and a population that doesn't care about soccer. If it's not Baseball, College Basketball, College Football, of the NFL they don't care. Oh yeah and I forgot doesn't help that the crew are shite!! FUCK COLUMBUS!

It's what I call the "Before Time". Who really cares how many people Columbus could sucker into watching a game there? What are the numbers like this year? They can't be all that good when you consider they just built a fucking concert stage where the north end seats used to be.

Fascinating. They got it right (accidently) by adding that ridiculous stage and creating a supporters section.

I may hate you gameday but supporters like yourself are crucial to saving your team from moving.
