Inclined to agree. It's just not as simple as they think. Other thing too is why bother to have a rule like this when LA will just sign an aging super star eventually going against that rule anyways. Should be incentives maybe to sign young DPs but shouldn't be restricted to
Bring in Pablo for a year then look for a U23 guy next year. MAybe the URuguay winger we were linked to will have improved by then.
I blame Miguel Almiron for this stupid DP rule. Everyone probably has to give all sale proceeds to Dallas too.
Dunno if it's already been mentioned but the head of the MLSPA said the DP rule won't come into effect until next season
So, has anyone heard what happens if you sign a 22 year old and he happens to turn 24? Does he have to vacate one of the other DP spots? Be re-signed as a TAM player? Be released into the wilderness?
Well how long is his contract? There can be all manner of ways around this. And it'll probably be similar to how a young DP works currently with a lower budget charge and with some other wanky MLS bullshit considerations tacked on.
Just wait until the new CBA document is published. If you've read the old one you'll know thats where all the nitty gritty is.
We don't need a young DP winger. We already have that project in the form of Erikson Gallardo.
What we need a proper goal scorer. Jozy's health just can't cut it. Piatti is a short term move until either: Gallardo matures or We land a top notch goal scorer.
Not clear to me Gallardo will amount to anything.
Just as much chance they signed a lemon as a development project.
Yeah, we really have lots of guys who can play wing – hell, Auro/ Morrow can be a tandem on the left, Gallardo could move over to the left, and of course there's a year-older Shaffs. I think we're covered there.
You're right. We don't really need Piatti. We need a proper striker who can score.
I'm starting to think Balotelli might actually be a decent option.
Skill wise maybe - but I really think they should be looking for a small guy who can dart around inside the 18.
When Jozy is actually around, that kind of player compliments him big time. The D gets preoccupied with all the movement from this crafty striker and they end up forgetting about Jozy / everyone else coming up the middle into the 18.
in 2017 we scored a shit ton of of goals because defenders - usually 2 of them - were too preoccupied with Seba. a Third defender would then cover those 2 guys in case Seba got away - leaving 1 defender to manage the rest of our friggen team.
this yound DP thing is really silly
why would TFC want to gamble on a 22 year old DP.
1) he could be awesome, but then we have to sell him cuz we might not have a "older" DP slot
2) he stinks, but we locked into the contract and cant sell or trade him
3) How many truly good 21-22 year olds want to come to MLS to develop. They essentially need to be diamonds in the rough who just need exposure. MLS isn't sporting or ajax, its not very good at developing talent
Agreed, and if you think we have seen the best of Poz I don't agree, i think he is going to be better. If you watched his Belgium work, he was amazing as a playmaker, passing off of both feet. I think he was a little tough on Shaff, but if he has someone he can trust.. Jozy, Piatti, Oso and even a Gallardo.. it will just open up the field even more for everyone. I am warming to the idea of Piatti, wanted Bruma but it is what it is.. I don't think Mertens or Willian were ever real options.
Edit - for that matter with those options even Mullins becomes dangerous

Se we sell Giovinco and lots of people were complaining that we're missing his speed and whatnot to open space for Jozy and can play forward when Jozy is hurt. Now we get a guy who looks to be similar in that regard to Giovinco but younger and he is not what we need.
Concerned about Piatti's size. He's smaller than Seba and though smaller guys have thrived in this league, it's usually been when they're very physical as well.
This is leaving out the consideration of him not having a track record of scoring goals or being able to fill in for Jozy.
Not sure what people are talking about - Seba is listed at 5 feet 2 while Piatti is listed at 5 foot 4.
Not big but not smaller then Seba by any means.
Yup. Little bit taller and a little bit heavier. Watching his YouTube vids, he fought through a lot of tackles and rough play too.
Also his goal scoring is similar to Giovinco's prior to TFC. Both had their best spells before coming here at a 1 in 3 clip. Prior they were both 1 in 5 or 6-ish with Piatti being slightly better at scoring despite being an out and out winger and from a better league.
If he is healthy he should be good for us.
Hoping to get this announcement done this weekend. It has been very quiet since we were told Piatti was in town for a medical.
Have been thinking the same thing, any update would be awesome since his medical was supposedly done Wednesday and met with the Raptors Dr Thursday. I guess maybe they are hashing out the contract details... hopefully. Too bad this weather couldn't have held off until after a signing, nothing like good old snow and cold to shock a possible DP from Argentina

Well, he started following Mark Gasol & the Raptors on IG if it's worth anything :P
When a DP signing happens, it won't be announced on a weekend. This is BIG news to drive eyeballs.
First, there will be a leak - maybe on the weekend but...that will happen. "Sources say..." etc.etc.
Then, they will let media know 24 hours before hand that there is an "Important Announcement" coming at a specific time.
IF a signing is announced next week, they will do it on Tuesday or Thursday, most likely. Wednesday is a game day in LA and the other days are not ideal.
