Toronto FC are set to sign 28-year-old French winger Nicolas Benezet from EA Guingamp https://t.co/er50bgD51h
Canadian Press picking up on the Benezet rumour as well, including a quote from a TFC source. https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/news/sou...193433242.html
"Benezet is a player that has been on our radar, but we have no agreement in place with him nor his club," said a TFC source.

The fact that tfc mentioned his name pretty much means its done.
Assuming the Benezet deal goes through. How exactly does our team lineup full strength? This presumably sends Endoh and Shaffelburg down the chain.
I feel like Shaffleburg has earned his spot with the team. Feel like they will keep him on the roster even with a new addition.

Benezet isn’t really a winger; he’s more of a midfielder.
He also wasn’t very good this season; he’s in decline, but was once a decent prospect. I follow/watch French football pretty religiously, and nothing I’ve seen of him this season say he’d do well here... it’s a bit of a toss-up. The entire Guingamp squad was more Ligue 2 than Ligue 1 this season if that says anything.
Some of the people saying he was going to MTL have changed to Toronto so it looks like it’s probably true.
If CP's Neil Davidson is writing about Benezet heading to TFC there has to be some real fire to it. He is not filing a story like this based off some random twitter banter, single report coming out of Europe driven by an agent. There is something defiantly going on here. Someone within the TFC camp is talking.

He’s really more of a midfielder. He can play on both sides or centrally and has been used as a winger, but that’s basically the equivalent of putting Osorio on the wing and calling him a winger.
He was not great this year and has been on a decline for several years; he’s small and fairly technical, but he gets bullied by the fast, athletic, physical Ligue 1 defenses. He’d play very hot/cold, and when cold was one of the worst men on the pitch; watching him get constantly dispossessed was probably depressing, but it would have just generally have been depressing to be a Guingamp supporter.
Guingamp has a couple moments this year, mostly when teams thought they were playing a friendly against team from Saint-Pierre et Miquelon.
Ligue 1 has a lot of disparity between the middle and bottom teams, with the bottom ones really being truly awful. Since they typically play 11 men behind the ball 99% of the time it’s kind of difficult to ascertain the effectiveness of their attacking players.
Like I said, he was a fairly decent prospect a few years ago, but hasn’t performed optimally since then. Not sure if it’s getting stuck with a weak team and ending up getting supplanted by some younger players, or whether he’s declined or just not capable of hacking it on a poor team in Ligue 1.
EAG was relegated and hopes to come back up, at which point Benezet was basically unceremoniously dumped from the squad due to a lack of effort and a high salary that wasn’t deemed effective. Earlier in the year, he was being linked to Ligue 2 clubs (and some from non-French clubs, probably TFC) due to attitude issues and poor play that kept him out of the squad as well.
Either way, it’s an interesting pickup depending on salary as he can play either side (though mostly on the left) and could make our attacking play a bit sharper. Or, he could be on the decline. Or, he could have had attitude issues and sucked because EAG was incredibly bad.
Time will tell!
Here's an article from a Guingamp news source that says its almost complete and he'll be signing a 2 year deal (until the end of 2021). https://www.letelegramme.fr/football...9-12348827.php
Translation below:
Nicolas Benezet will leave Guingamp this summer. According to our information, his transfer to Toronto is almost complete. The 28-year-old playmaker is expected to sign for two years at the MLS club, until 2021.
Under contract with En Avant until June 2020, the Nîmes, who had already almost left during the last winter transfer window, had told Patrice Lair, at the end of June, his desire elsewhere and had been training since with the reserve team.
I think that’s going a bit far.
He can certainly play football, unlike Boyd, and he isn’t going to get into a fistfight with his coach or try to mess with Zlatan like VdW.
To me, it’s just that he could either be a decent player depending on salary, or he could be a flop. He was offered to some second tier teams, including one whose manager had the same agent (Lens), but no one bit. That, to me, says that there’s an imbalance in the quality-price ratio or that no one wanted to risk a further decline.
With the attitude, I’m just concerned because we’ve had plenty of lazy players, and Vanney hasn’t seemed able to deal with attitude issues from ego players in the most ideal way. Plus, this season is going to require some grit and fight, and a guy who complains about his teammates playing slowly and turns off when there’s adversity isn’t going to work well with this iteration of TFC.
Then again, he could be a good fit for MLS and do well. It’s a bit of a risk — I’m just concerned about this team taking yet another risk that doesn’t work out and being saddled with what I assume is a fairly reasonably sized salary. Not sure how much room we even have left though.
For a team that's been preaching "character" as a big part of their scouting this whole signing is surprising based on your assessment. I'm not doubting it (the signing or your judgement) - I don't follow the French league to comment - I just thought we were done with this kind of player.

so does someone move?
We know chapman is done but doubt he has much trade value
Marky has excellent trade value
Or is this to have some guns always available on the bench.
He can play as an attacking midfielder (Osorio, Chapman, Pozo) either centrally or on the side, or on the wing potentially (Shuffleboard, maybe Gallardo, assuming he actually exists). He could potentially play a second striker role too.
He’s not really very defensively oriented, so getting rid of Marky would be a bit silly.
Sorry for any grammar mistakes too — I’m ESL.

Someone in the midfield has to move. Ensco made this point a long time ago and the options are Marky, Oso and Deleon.
Chapman isn’t “done”. It was only three or four weeks ago that Vanney was praising him and he was first off the bench, and playing well when used correctly to minimize his weaknesses and maximize his strengths.
A couple of posts above someone mentioned VdW taking on Zlatan. Good for him. Teller of truth.
