Honestly it has given me encouragement that Vanney has been flexible on this front when 4-3-3 was a disaster against Independiente he switched to 4-4-2. In both games this season he has adapted during the game and it has helped. You really need a team that can play 4-4-2 ....3-5-2...4-5-1...and 4-3-3 and the different variations. Trying to force a single rigid system is wrong. You have to play with the best 11 players available & they need to be adaptable.
Are any of you rollerblading to the airport?
The VDW saga is finally over:

OK, frees up an int spot but whether this gives salary relief is another matter.

Just minutes ago, van der Wiel released, mutual consent. Check TFC website
Should scrub his salary off the books and that's good enough.
Things seem a little unsure as to how this exactly is done but I would be surprised if there isn't some relief.
Check out this tweet at https://twitter.com/plattoli/status/1109182805743796224
No buyout though. Mutual consent is the dissolution of the contract mutually. TFC terminating his contract based on conduct as they could have done would probably have had to be a buyout as I couldn't see the MLSPA letting that go.
I wouldn't be shocked if he waived a golden handshake so he stop training on his own and go sit on a beach in Dubai or somewhere till he can find a club in the summer.
Typically the Mutual consent happens when the player has found another team. I wouldn't expect someone to walk away from the better part of $1,000,000 unless he had alternative means.
The VDW saga probably took so long because TFC likely were working with the league to see what they could do. I’d doubt we’d be negatively penalized/ cap harm or else why bother doing anything.
My speculation is the TAM money and Int roster spot are now both available
Yeah, my suspicion is this too.
$150K of cap space lost but all that TAM & an int slot now available.
Looking more & more like another move for an international TAM player before the end of next week.
&
as Platt just speculated, this likely means the yearly buyout was used on Aketxe.

hahahaha
Please Note - I see nothing wrong with this.
I have no idea what the salary cap implications are. I would guess partial but not full cap relief. I'll wait to see if Curtis or Manning say anything on it.
Good riddance. Mavinga is free to go with him next.
Just for the record, I thought VDW would be a really great player for us, being a great passer out back would have further enhanced the teams cohesion.

I thought the Spanish team Aketxe went to picked up his contract? Perhaps we didn't buy out either one.
Yeah let's all be honest, we don't actually know what vdW leaving now means in terms of roster and cap hit. Oliver Platt said so himself at the top of his Twitter thread: "I imagine that might mean partial but not full cap relief for TFC." If it was full cap relief, then they likely would have done it earlier. I see no mechanism for that in MLS; otherwise lots of teams would do some kind of "mutual consent" thing. If vdw were going straight to another team, i.e. trade, then there would be cap relief. But they didn't announce a trade, most transfer windows are closed (unless he were moving within MLS), and "mutual consent" means something else.
I doubt we ever get full disclosure about this. Maybe some hints based on where vdW goes next. Folks here in this thread will comment based on how they would like to spin it for the club (good or bad).
