My beef with the Sunshine Girl

And no this is not a rant about the quality of the ladies which varies from "very nice" to "what were they smoking?".

This is about the Official Newspaper of Toronto FC, never having a girl on there with TFC gear on!

We've seen quite a few girls show up over the years that say they are soccer fans. And many in the last couple of years during the existance of Toronto FC. And we see many girls show up with local team gear on. From the Leafs, to the Jays (yesterday had Jays stuff on) to Argos to even OHL and AHL teams!

But no TFC? From one of our own sponsors?

I really wish TFC had been able to bring on board a different newspaper. They did a great job with Kia, BMO, Carlsburg etc. But the Sun might be that one spot on an otherwise perfect corporate sponsorship execution.

also...

i hear there are a lot of pics of girls on the interweb...so the relevance of the sunshine girl is less and less...

soon people talking about sunshine girls will be like people with mullets...clearly they don't have email/internet.

(although it would be awesome if one of the girls rocked some RPB gear.)

I think maybe I see this from a different perspective being as that I have been involved in sponsorship arrangements before.

Last night I was at the Raptor game and you could tell BMO was doing everything it could to a) get their name out and b) support the Raptors. They are taking advantage of the sponsorship arrangement the most they can. It was almost too much. But you can't blame them for trying.

What does the Sun do?

For me this really isn't an issue of the Sunshine girl per say, as much as it is a symptom of the Sun's disregard for this team. You'd think the Sun, a dying newspaper in a dying industry, would be doing everything it could to make sure it stays relevant. That's marketing people, that's advertising. And ignoring an up and coming force in Toronto like TFC...well...I hope they eventually drop out and someone else steps in. Shoot...even the Star would have been better.

Public/audience pressure has always been the way to make corporations take notice. And part of our jobs as supporters is to make TFC bigger than it is...as big as we can make it.

That's why if there was TFC underwear...I'd wear it to the beach!
