Smoking out the goalie???

Not trying to stir anything up, but just curious. Why do we smoke out own goalie out at the beginning of the game?? If D.C. were to take a shot within the first minute or two, Sutton would not be able to see anything.

Couldn't the smoke wait for the 2nd half, when DC's goalie is in net?
