Default So Long Ugly MLS Cup! Hello Tiff & Co.

Maybe now the MLS cup will actually be a cup!

    http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=937882

It was announced today the the league has redesigned and renamed the MLS Cup trophy to the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy, effective immediately.

According to an official MLS release, the trophy ‘reflects the traditions of the game, while providing a dynamic and forward-looking design.’ The trophy will be given out for the first time on November 23rd at this year’s championship game in Los Angeles.

'The cup also features a map at the base, with a star signifying every MLS city.'

    We'll see...

If there is the 'traditional' 1985 'Soccer' ball on it anywhere, they have failed... Good job MLS.

It's gonna need to be modified year-after-year until it's rammed with stars.

I'm having a really hard time imagining how this won't be ugly.

I'm having a hard time imagining this being any worse than the current one.

Like renaming it matters, everyone will still call it the MLS cup. It's currently called the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy, and we all see how much that name gets used.

Rothenberg Trophy doesn't have such a great ring to it does it???

    Maybe the Alan Cup? Whatever...

    The Cup...

I sorta proposed we call it the Alan before, but since it's now switched to Anschultz, I guess we call 'er Phil.

But regardless -- we win it, or nothing matters.

That's the US open Cup that you're thinking of. The MLS Cup doesn't have a name.

MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto

The US Open Cup is named after Lamar Hunt. The old MLS Cup trophy was indeed named after Rothenburg.

Regardless, the playoff tournament and championship game will always be referred to as MLS Cup.

Nice looking trophy though. Looks a lot better than the rip-off Vince Lombardi trophy/sex toy thing they had before.

    I stand corrected.

That is a pretty sweet (and expensive) claret jug but you normally only see those for golf.

It's the Americas Cup. Probably the most expensive contest going.

They can send it in a sack - so long as they send it to Toronto soon.

    I like it!
Simple. Elegant. And it isn't that ugly thing they've had for years. It definitely is an improvement. Maybe some people won't like it, but I do.
