    Toronto FC's hopes dashed
    LARRY MILLSON

TORONTO — The Fat Lady may have been reaching for the throat lozenges Saturday afternoon, but she had to choke back that aria for a while after Toronto FC's 3-2 victory over the Chicago Fire.

Toronto's first home victory since June 14 in its final regular-season game of the year at BMO Field kept the club's faint Major League Soccer playoff hopes flickering for a while longer.

Toronto FC simply ran out of games.
English midfielder Rohan Ricketts scored twice Saturday afternoon to lift Toronto to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire in its final home game of the Major League Soccer campaign.
The Canadian club was officially eliminated from playoff contention Saturday night when both the Kansas City Wizards and the New York Red Bulls won their respective contests. The Wizards defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 at home, while the Red Bulls earned a 3-1 win over the visiting Columbus Crew.

Too little, too late for Toronto FC

    THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- With Toronto FC's tenuous post-season hopes on the line, John Carver told his players simply to give themselves a chance.

They did exactly that, and then left the rest to fate.

Needing a victory to have any hopes of making the playoffs, Rohan Ricketts scored a pair of goals and Amado Guevara added one to lead Toronto to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday in the team's final regular-season game at BMO Field.

Reds win but it's too little, too late
Ricketts scores a pair of goals but TFC out of playoffs anyway
    By DEAN MCNULTY, SUN MEDIA

Toronto FC saved its best soccer of the season for its final home game yesterday afternoon in a 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire at BMO Field.
Unfortunately, any reward for the effort was gone by the time the clock struck midnight.
TFC was at the mercy of two key games being played last night -- New York Red Bulls at Columbus Crew and San Jose Earthquakes at Kansas City Wizards -- and when the Red Bulls beat the Crew 3-1 and the Wizards beat San Jose 3-2, it ended any chance of post season play for the Reds.

Reds left to watch scoreboard, hope for help to stay in playoff chase

TORONTO -- When Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored in the 59th minute on Saturday to cut Toronto FC's lead over Chicago to 3-2, there was an uncomfortable sense of deja vu settling over BMO Field. Four times this season the Reds have been victimized by late goals that turned possible wins into draws (such as last Saturday against FC Dallas) and possible draws into losses (as in TFC's previous game against Chicago, a 2-1 loss on July 12).

Driving down to Columbus for the first game, those in our truck had a conversation about the season, and the general consensus was that if we could win 10 games this season, we would be happy. 9 wins and one game to go, I think it can be done.

I honestly thought we had a shot at the play-offs in year two. Squad looked good, especially when Ricketts, Robert and Guevara joined us, but at this point I don't think any of us can honestly say that TFC deserves to be in the play-offs. We finished strong and it'll be helpful going into the post-season. Up and onwards, next year we'll be even stronger I'm sure.

I thought the same thing. We had a good start to the season, then we hit a slump that lasted a lot longer than we had all hoped. They finished strong, but it's a little too late. I kept saying to myself yesterday, where the hell was this team two months ago?

that's basically what the board predicted in my preseason predictions thread.
after the san jose game I'll post the details.
so if anyone says TFC didn't meet expectations -- well, the common wisdom of the board said they exactly met the expectations people had for them.

That is really interesting. I look forward to seeing that thread.
