Stakes high for Canada

Canada's men's World Cup team is facing the almost unbearable prospect of sitting out another four years.
But heading into its qualifying game Wednesday in Mexico (Rogers Sportsnet, 9 p.m. ET) with just one point to show from two home games, the Canadians are trying to keep feelings of desperation from creeping in, and to put the disappointment of the previous two outings behind them.
"That's what we have to do," Canadian coach Dale Mitchell said after a training session in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. "We're going to play a good team on Wednesday, so we have to make sure that we're not feeling sorry for ourselves, that we're ready to battle against a tough opponent in a tough place to play and do everything we can to get a result here."

Toronto FC newcomer Barrett demands more from self
Former Chicago Fire striker's tireless work ethic not dampened by health issues

Chad Barrett is his harshest critic.
When Toronto FC acquired the 23-year-old forward in a trade with the Chicago Fire in late July, the Canadian club hoped he would be able to inject some life into its stagnant attack.
So far, Barrett has obliged with two goals in six games, including a spectacular free kick from 34 yards out in a 1-0 win on the road over the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 9 that snapped a six-game winless streak for Toronto.
Aside from his pair of goals, the Oregon native has earned rave reviews from his teammates and coach John Carver for his tireless work ethic, ability to stretch the opposition's defence, and his vision on the field.
Still, Barrett insists he can do better.

Ibrahim still recovering
Forward hopes to return to training Thursday

Ibee Ibrahim missed training again on Tuesday as he continues to recover from injury. The 17 year old forward was ruled out of Saturday's game against Chivas USA after getting a kick to his thigh in training on Friday. "My thigh bruised heavily and hurt when I was walking. I was really upset to get the injury the day before the game because we had so many players away," said Ibrahim.

Because of my residing in this area, I'm thoroughly familiar with zombies. There's a zombie walk every year. The undead, lurching critters are everywhere for a whole day. Nobody stops and stares. It's that kind of neighbourhood. We've seen it all. I suspect, actually, that there are many zombies in Toronna right now. Several play for Toronto FC, and lurch around failing to kick the ball, incapable of scoring a goal. I also suspect that those candidates for the Conservative Party in downtown Toronna are zombies. They are dead but they keep moseying around.
