Fair and reasonable… maybes and possibilities. IIUC, SAfrican window (incoming) closed end of JAN24 and does not open to run to again until 01JUL to 20AUG24. Mailula did make the bench for Cincinatti. IIRC, got injured shortly after he arrived and played last season. Thinking it’s to earlier to assess if TFC’s restored analytics process used in this players selection is flawed and that he makes the pitch in the next couple of matches. Suspect, Herdman is focusing via substitution on certain youth-Canadians in order to decide any fates or showcase for loan-out; particularly Akinola and Thompson. Believe historically that Mailula regularly slotted more on left than right channels, so with Herdman’s simplification of responsibilities and tasks against decision priorities, Mailula is in congested territories of depth for either, bidding his turn. Akinola is getting some special attention/leeway being a Herdman CMNT project.

They think the ability is probably there, he's just overwhelmed and lost in the shuffle, hasn't stepped up yet. They're hoping Herdman brings more out of him. I think if he goes a few months without managing to make an impact, they'll try to loan him. They've already got a few loans on the move for some of the yutes.

    Profile wise, makes sense.

Injury wise, I hope we did the proper diligence.I don’t want another Diomande situation.

yeah, i mean it seems like he was on trial for a while with us so hopefully would have gotten a good look at him.

In North American terms Longstaff is like taking a flier on a former top 10 draft pick. Low risk/high reward. I'm definitely rooting for him.

so this would seem to be the imminent signing jloome was talking about.

you'd think the further one would be a forward (praying).

You dont sign him then let him sit for a few games. A kid like him needs to play. Blessing will be gone, book it.. Too much money for a bench player

I know they're always scouting now, and have people looking at individual leagues, not just regions.
Won't we need to move a body out in-order to sign another player after Matty ?

We need an international slot though.

in that same line of thought, i'd be shocked if rosted is here to the summer.

behind shane o neill despite 2X the budget hit and now we have longstaff who can fill in at the back too.

Yep. I think that's the complication

I wonder if Longstaff has Canadian grandparents. His father was a pro ice hockey player but in England. Normally, those dudes are Canadians who go over there, but he appears to have been a Brit.

If he has Canadian ancestry we might not need an int'l slot.

May also be that Coello is going off the list, if he's counted as homegrown. Homegrown internationals don't need a permit after a certain period (A year, I think).

Or we just miscounted on the int'l slots and there's one left.

Rosted is paid a lot relative to what he's shown. I don't think we'll be able to shed him easily.

Plus, they may seem him as having some value. He played some DM when he was younger, and is definitely a "step up" defender. He's not strong in the box or great in the air, but he passes pretty well. So they may see him as utility depth.

I don't think we have enough CBs who can compete that we'd get rid of him.

Unless TFC parks Spicer in II for the time being until another IS is secured? Agree, likely candidate seems to be Blessing.

Apparently Nicksoen Gomis was not let go by Sheffield United, we signed him from them. But instead of a flat fee we negotiated a sell-on clause. He wanted first-team football and wasn't going to get it there this year.

I presume that means we've told him he'll get some significant playing time.

I'm not sure Longstaff needs one. Seems a heck of a coincidence his dad was a pro hockey player, makes me suspect Canadian lineage.

I like this Longstaff signing and hope it works out. What position does he play? Do we now see a Matty - Debyi - Osorio midfield?

    Pros:

    - Very Young still, 23, probably eager and motivated to get back up to speed and try to get back to Europe
    - Likely understands tactics coming up in the Newcastle and EPL system (something missing from so many American and Canadian young players)
    - Probably not coming at any high cost
    - Comes from similar style leagues ( I feel the lower level English leagues like Championship etc compare well with MLS)

He'd need to go on a full-season loan to TFC2 to open the slot. Short-term loans to MLSNP don't open up roster slots

We feel confident the TFC FO doesn't think we're getting the good Newcastle Longstaff, right?

Granted I haven't seen him, but his resume since 2021, on paper, is far from inspiring. At a really low cap hit I'm good with a flyer, but at a decent wage and international spot (does he take one?) I really don't see this. I don't know what we're getting, here.

He is a rejuvenation project of a once highly touted prospect who had offers from Inter Milan etc. For what it's worth, Newcastle fans seem to rate him and blame injuries + bad management for his decline. https://www.reddit.com/r/NUFC/commen...about_to_sign/

In a way, coming here and with Herdmann is perfect as this whole team is a rejuvenation project at the moment. Low risk high reward. Worst case hes another average player for us. Best case he succeeds and gets interest from Europe again.
