Again, a fair ask? Where's Waldo? Was BM there at this announcement or too much of a minnow to be present? Not in San Diego/Cali is he? Where might he be then?

I imagine he's in his office in Toronto? I don't think he ever travels with the team. Could be wrong. We're not his only consideration, though. If history is any marker, we're barely his consideration at all. That's why he hired Ali, then gave Bob the sporting director job as well.
If there's someone big he can contribute to signing, with a trip and some wine-and-dining overseas, I'm sure he'll be all over it.
Summer of Petretta
Have tried. Quick search yielded only one very, very, very tenuous connect so far. It is that the current manager of Basel who has a historic relationship with that club/city, essentially Petretta's career club/city, happens to be the second-cousin to a former TFC player and current MLS stalwart. That relationship is between an Alexander Frei and a Stephan Frei.
That's not a connection, dude, not even tenuous. Stefan hasn't been here for years.
They just scouted him, probably. Why assume it had to come from some contact? We have a team of scouts. It's highly likely they were scouting the Turkish league because it has some cheap assets and Canadians, and they might even have flagged him in Switzerland, because all three Canadian teams have signed guys from that league in the past.
Has anyone found any clips of this guy on youtube?

Courtesy of FBFCP!
Atlanta are offering him a DP deal, apparently:

So if it's another striker, it's not him. Ellis is apparently San Jose. Anyone else on the MLS striker radar? Other than Giroud, who sounds like he wants to go to Galaxy.
i wonder if Liam Millar put in a good word to him about our fair city
There are going to be people on the CMNT boards who have seen every Liam Millar game and will therefore know something about this guy. I have an idea who to ask. stay tuned.

Here is the goal Petretta scored in a 2-1 defeat Dec. 28th 2022 his last goal.

So we still have two more International spots available (3 if Vazquez is allowed to count as one of the bonus international spots [I'm still unsure about the rules for that if it has to be played the last most recent full year with a Canadian side, or just one year with an MLS side ever])
Here is also his assist on the 4th goal in a 6-1 win. 4th round of the Turckish cup. NOV 8th 2022.

so assuming we get SJ and rosted over the line, the starting lineup as of now would be:
insigne jj/ayo/dio berna
kaye bradley oso
RP SR MH RL
SJ
the team would still have the open DP spot and u22 spots to fill. i reckon they trade 1 striker, bring in a DP starting ST and use the u22 signings as depth in various spots.

I wouldn’t use that DP spot until the summer transfer window - and really see where we should use that spot (mid / striker)
i was just looking at starting lineups from the previous two seasons and safe to say even if we dont upgrade at ST before the season (and the rosted/ SJ signings are confirmed) we will be absolutely miles better off in virtually every single position than those years.
I like being optimistic, and there is a lot to like about Petretta's resume.
He graduated from the FC Basel academy and went on to play 152 games for their senior team, including big champions league and Europa league games. In 2018, he earned a call up to Italy's U21 team.
But...
I have to wonder why Basel gave up on him. They invested years in him and he played significant minutes for almost 5 years.
He had a ligament injury that kept him out of action for nearly 6 months.
I am sure TFC required him to pass a physical. Right?
Just had a thought, he's holding up the 2021-2022 Red Kit (rather than the white-grey one) Maybe TFC realized that the white and grey kit was so disliked that they're replacing that jersey instead of the red jersey. The leaked kit was barely red, maybe that's why. Probably not, but I'm just hoping, I just really dislike the white-grey kit.
Edit: maybe this should've gone in the mls kit thread instead.
