Not to be inappropriate, but wouldn’t be surprised if there was always a strong chance of Salcedo returning to Mexico within a year.

New Athletic piece on TFC https://theathletic.com/3418684/2022...richie-laryea/
- Berna isn't a done deal yet. TFC has made a strong offer but he isn't sure if he wants to leave Europe
- Additions to defense will likely be in the off season
- Richie isn't coming to TFC, although Dallas and Vancouver are interested along with a couple offers in Europe
- Being "buzzy" is the mandate at TFC and MLSE doesn't care what it costs
- Everything TFC has done the past year is unprecedented and other teams/observers don't really know how to judge it (the good and bad)
If this is the case, this year is shot. I have little confidence this team can make a run to the playoffs unless we have at least one CB addition. Mavinga and O’Neill are not going to cut it.
Let’s not forget Osorio is out of contract after this year too. All the more reason for the club to push itself with signings. Otherwise additions will continually be less than subtractions.
"They’re following that pattern again this summer, but it feels like this new crop of players — coupled with the inevitable additions that will come this offseason, particularly at the back — have better odds of getting TFC back on track."
Here's the exact quote from The Athletic on defenders. It doesn't say they won't sign defenders this window, but it makes it seem defenders are coming in the offseason.
Tom Bogert (one of the more reliable deal breakers) said "Nothing imminent or advanced between the Colorado Rapids and Toronto FC involving Mark-Anthony Kaye" and then he broke the deal three days letter. I find a lot of the US MLS journalists are really hesitate to say something is going to happen until the ink has fully dried and press releases are drawn up. That said, Singh is probably a bit premature with saying how close Berna is.

Figured the Berna discussions were stalling once Romano cooled off on it. Singh is irrelevant in this, he has no sources so his information is vapor.
IF he doesn’t come I doubt we fill the 3 DPs this window.
this is a total clown show,we give away a DP to a potential playoff rival, without another dp confirmed.lawrence is starting every game and we are paying for that, auro is being paid by tfc,no d help this window, busy window my ass, more guys leaving then coming in the argo president is mr bs

Toronto FC are closing on Federico Bernardeschi deal. Final details now discussed on contract before signing third Italian player after Insigne and Criscito. 🇨🇦🇮🇹 #TorontoFC
Bernardeschi’s agents, checking the contracts and then it will be done.
Check out this tweet at https://twitter.com/DiMarzio/status/1546974502491504643
And now DiMarzio says Berna to TFC is a done deal.
Four in a row - this will be great, I say!

#TFCLive are closing in on making Federico Bernardeschi official soon per @FabrizioRomano. Also hearing from a club source that another Italian could be coming in soon. Toronto FC will have two DP slots when Carlos Salcedo leaves on July 15. 🇮🇹🔜🇨🇦
This is always how transfers work. Someone says it is done prematurely, the agent leaks something trying to get a couple extra bucks, the agent gets it and they close.
If we don’t land Bernardeschi we should try and get Arsenal U23 player Reiss Nelson as a Young DP. He’s been out on loan in the Bundesliga and scored 10 goals for Hoffenheim, and then again to Feyernoord last year where he was less successful, with two in 21.
But his contract is expiring, he’s young, fast and talented, will both perform and have strong resale back to Europe. Plus, whatever deal he gets after Arsenal (likely the Championshiop or League One) he won’t get what we could pay him as a young DP. And there’s evidence now from LA and others than a young DP is well-showcased in MLS.
Anyway, just an idea.
2 months struggling does not equal "the team knows & I do that I'm leaving"
Hopefully we can get Bernardeschi announced by weeks end and into training soon after. Imagine the excitement knowing that both Insigne and Bernardeschi could debut on the 23rd together.
Do DP defenders (CB) work in this league? I feel like veteran MLS guys are more reliable in that spot. Or maybe the expectation is too high with DP and it underwhelms in that position.
Stejskal & Tenorio tend to look at things with the lens of roster movement having to make sense within what MLS does.
TFC...doesn't do that.
i.e. TFC going to change paradigms doesn't fit their paradigm
Playoffs are not going to happen. They always were only really a potential but unlikely scenario - we would have to have hit on 2 decent youths, have Poz being able to work within the BB system & have Salcedo solidify our defence.
Enough things went wrong for this scenario to not have much hope of working out this season.
The Cup final though - that is doable.
