I don’t really see how what MLSE is doing makes marketing sense - unless they go full 1977 Cosmos here and pay Ronaldo $200M or whatever it would take for him to come. These two guys feel like secondary pieces, to me, if what you are trying to do is get real TV ratings.

Soccer wise, I mean, who knows? I could see anything. But winning teams generally (but not always) have more equal distribution in caliber of player and pay, rather than less. (I have no data to support this, maybe somebody does.)

To be fair, people on here were criticising Soteldo & Salcedo before they even touched a ball.

I just don't think the response at the time was "Well he was playing in Brasil/LigaMx therefore he must be good".

My concern about his offensive stats is hard to get over - we have seen this before.

What bouys me is universally people say he is willing to track back & put the work in. I just don't think a 12 goals in 5 year guy is going to magically become a 12 goals a year forward, while a DP slot for a defensive minded RW is kinda hard to justify.

And, again, I'd like to see proof of his capability beyond "well he played in x country". Yeh, he played in X country & underperformed there offensively.

No one did or he would be playing in CL instead of playing against Charlotte…

When hustling and tracking back is what you all are selling on why he’s such a great player, if I said this guy played for some middle of the pack team from any of the top 5 leagues would you be happy with the signing? With the following track record 12 goals and 24 assists in 5 years and didn’t score a goal for over a 12 month period.

that is the point if he didn’t play for Juve or Italy we would be loosing it. So for a moment step back and think about it.

Just reading the posts over the past few days and the tone seems to have gotten toxic, with people insulting and sniping at each other. This is supposed to be an enjoyable experience. I used to post regularly but stopped after one individual called me a misogynist because I said Andi Petrillo had nice legs. Apparently I offended them. This forum is one of the best sources of TFC information because let's face it the mainstream media in Toronto ignore soccer. However if the current level of incivility continues I wouldn't be surprised if more posters leave and the forum eventually dies due to a lack of participants, and this would be a shame.

In news that's actually of substance, looks like the Salcedo deal is going slower than we thought, but for good reasons.

I don't know why multiple teams would want him, but good for him.

he played with the following players in no particular order. Chiesa, Dybala, Ronaldo, Higuain, Valhovic. And he got 12 goals and 24 assists in 183 games over 5 years. I’m not saying he won’t be a good addition to this team. All I’m saying is a lot of you guys think just because he’s coming to the MLS he’s going to cake walk through this league. I know a few players who came from Europe that played in this league and they all told me this league is a lot more difficult then the average fan thinks.

remember these players are coming from leagues and teams were the skill and tactical knowledge are ingrained in them since they were a kid. They come here the skill is lower and the tactical knowledge is lower and is a lot more physical. It’s a very difficult change for a lot of players and not all of them can adept. Not to talk about travel or playing surfaces.

In a perfect world he would be an ideal TAM signing (meaning he would be the 4th-6th highest paid player on the team) but this league is not at the point with the salary cap
I’m with you. That said, at this point he’s seemingly on board, all I can do is hope it works out.

I always find the “you don’t understand the skill gap” comments interesting. Nobody is blind to the fact Europe is light years ahead of MLS. But Europe also has a platform where a solid player on a good team (heck, even on an average team) can look to his teammates to cover off other areas. You can get away with being a specialist.

Here? You better have the mentality that you’re putting the team on your back and are going to run with shit if you’re taking up a DP spot. Because your teammates will not pick up the slack for you at 1/10th the salary.

Which, by the way, is why Giovinco was the far superior MLS footballer to Defoe. One guy could adapt and put the team on his back. The other stood on the half way line like a twat with his hands on his hips, waiting for the service that never came.

I think he is going to look very good with Criscito and I commend him for going full out until his transfer or not…. I like him. I think we should line up Thomspon, Salcedo, Criscito, Mavinga on Saturday. Just really hoping 44 become a stabilizer for the back. Going to be worried about Thomson until we get a proper RB and then develop him and he gets a year or two to learn.

Usually lack of rumours or deals means players are coming by trade or not at all. That’s what I’m thinking about the D situation right now.

The problem (a problem, I guess, not like it's a huge issue if we're winning) is on the other side, it's kind of what happened with Vanney - when do these kids actually play? If they're not getting minutes, is TFC2 actually going to give them the development they need? For every 'missed' player like Millar, we've had several worse players that end up in CPL or even worse.

Yeah, it’s a fair point. If anything we’re not selective enough about who we promote and we don’t give “the best” enough time.

Of our current crop, I think Petrasso can be a solid MLS player and Nelson could be really special (but it will be a painful ride along the way). I think JMR could be okay too (not seeing the “top prospect” billing yet… although his football IQ is beyond the rest). Not sure about any of the others and I’m probably going to be the guy who says we should cut Okello loose just to watch him become MLS’s Yaya Toure

Oh, and the last DP we had who had underwhelming stats before arriving was Soteldo, so not that long ago.

Again, looks like a different mentality on Berni - different result with the ball? We shall see.

That was me who responded to you with that. In hindsight misogynist was not the right word. That said, I didn’t think it was necessary to point out parts of her body. Happy to discuss further in PMs with you if you want.

I fully get and agree with the people who have reservations about what Bernie can do here because he is FAR from a sure thing but at the same time a scrub from League One came over with meh numbers as well and now is one of the legends of MLS. So who knows until it happens.

All fair points… i only put Thompson there because i think BB likes him there. Couldn’t figure out why JMR came out to play the left side the past two games when he was supposed to be the RB. Left Petrasso out because Mavinga has played LB in the past. I am hoping that Criscito is grounded and can be the rock should Mavinga or Salcedo wander, which they tend to do…LOL

IQ is probably what stands out to me most, though probably because we've seen so little of it outside of JMR/Priso in that order. It's why I'm so low on Nelson, there are some things you can't really teach and that seems like one of them. The only thing I know is that half a season should be enough to at least see which ones need some more simmering and which ones are ready for a no excuses trial by fire.

If nothing else, there will be a cold night where we see Bernie sitting on a chair alone and the memes will be glorious.

I left this forum many years ago because a mod handed me a red reputation card for disagreeing with my anti-Vanney opinion.

I may contribute again if everyone, including the mods remain civil.

I feel like I'm missing something with JMR because he has to be the most risk averse player I've ever seen at his age. Never seems willing to take someone on which is pretty weird for a wide player and way too content to play backwards or sideways. I don't really understand why - he's our academy's most hyped prospect who we seem more than receptive to selling and BB isn't shy about playing kids. Why is he so afraid of trying stuff?

I'm pretty sure the answer is he isn't that kind of player and is more of a glue guy who does the simple things really well because obviously big EPL clubs are interested in him for a reason. I've tried to keep a closer eye on him when he plays but truthfully I don't have a good idea of what his strongest attributes are. He does seem to have great balance with the ball and knows how to create separation from defenders, but doesn't use it to beat anyone or advance forward/meaningfully. He doesn't get exposed much and I can't say I remember him making any mistakes, but he doesn't create enough danger moving forward either, so I'm not sure how high his footy IQ really is.

Ideally he'd be our starting RB with license to move forward and an experienced, defensively savvy RW in Berna to help him out. I think that was the plan the club had when the season started anyway, minus the Berna part, and it would give us the chance to reinforce other positions better (CM and CB mainly). I just don't have much confidence it'll work out as I think we all wish it would

Much prefer the idea of Brunelleschi (you don’t receive a name like that if you’ve not of a certain class in a very good league) as a DP over Soteldo who I found annoying to watch.

Yes, he should probably not be the 2nd highest paid player on the roster but MLS is weird that way. I’d rather see players who can play Bradley’s system and I’d be really surprised if Bernardeschi can’t do it really well. I want to see players who can make the roster work. MAK would help a lot too.

MLS wages are often overpayment or underpayment. We’re getting a bit more of a middle class lately but, socio-economically speaking, if the league were a country it would be more like Brazil or Iran than Canada.

bernardeschi will give us 15+ g/a a season, flexibility to play anywhere across the frontline, good tactical awareness, athleticism, defensive responsibility.

insigne is the wow factor in a side, that's pretty much what i'd want from my second DP in a team.

really looking forward to seeing insigne, jiminez and bernardeschi on the pitch together in a couple weeks.

any new updates on Bernardeschi or MAK joining the club, or any other name being linked with joining TFC, do we see ourselves loosening any contracts with other players than C Salcedo?? Just excited to see what can be with TFC
