Once we went down Atlanta just took control, played more patiently.

Yeh, pretty much that. Atlanta use the speed of their pitch & when not on turf, you can see how a play develops like it would on turf but doesn't quite come off. They play a 5-2-3 that becomes a 3-4-3 in transition. There problem is usually defensive lapses & no pressure from their defensive midfield.

What bugs me about that team is Atlanta plays a certain chippy South American way that isn't quite CONCACAF - done so since the beginning. They whine more & do the obvious dives (see Barco). CONCACAF teams tend to be quiet stoic "don't mess with me man" sort of stuff & "my leg hurts Ref" sort of gamesmanship when tackled.

Think Osorio facing up to people & Delgado rubbing his leg after a tackle - that's CONCACAF & most of MLS.

Atlanta is more rolling around & incredulity.

That was a friggin annoying game to watch in the stands. After a number of fairly professional & motivated performances by TFC, that was mostly shite. They let themselves get controlled by Atlanta’s shithousery. And Osorio desperately needed to be subbed off. Did Perez even make all 5 subs?

I wonder if there will be any supplemental discipline. What was the video review for? The two red cards had already been given. Did the video review official suggest further red cards and the ref overrode that?

The ref was great at acting tough and getting way too close in players’ faces right from the start of the game, but really bad at actually controlling the game.

Oh and Jozy finally back, but now Achara injured. I bet Lawrence is pretty banged up as well. This team is doomed.

Add in a Jays team that is on the upswing and capturing the City’s interest with “stars” like Vlad and Bo that will take the casual sports fan towards the Dome and not BMO next spring/summer.

The management of this team needs to start thinking of a way to make people want to come to BMO again. We saw on Weds that there is interest in Soccer in this town if given the right product and a buzz gets created - but right now there is no product, and there is no buzz around this team, other than the old 2017 guard needs to be changed over and top level younger talent - including an all important “A” level striker — needs to be playing for TFC by 2022.

But hey they will likely just tell us that they are “holding ticket prices” and that the DPs will be healthy next year, as if that’s a big thing at this point....where is the Liewicki letter for this season?!

Attendance also did not match what was showing up on Ticketmaster. I opted against buying my seasons for the remaining games and am buying per game depending on what I can attend. There were not many seats available online except in the super expensive zones. In person there were LOTS of gaps. The play right now is to just buy the cheapest seats and sit wherever you want.

I think actual real-life attendance for the Argos has been as good or better than TFC. Who would have thunk it!

Another game, another loss....when will this s.hitshow of a season end?

Sign some DP striker the second the season ends...one milli second after that complete waste of space Altidore is bought out. Enough is enough of him literally walking around the field. He touched the ball once in his walking display. Ffs...gets paid over $5M a year...5th highest salary and he can't be bothered to even move in a 30 minute appearance, absolutely disgraceful. Look at Atlanta's forwards move and create chances...now look at ours:

...a not ready for prime Shaffaleburgh-God bless him for his effort but he is not good enough. RUns like a chicken with his head cut off and continually gets dispossessed trying to get by guys.
...Acharra-not his fault we don't have a DP striker but he is simply not good enough. Is better than journeymen Mullins but that's not syaing much. Hope the kid isn't hurt bad though and I wish him a speedy recovery.

And Altidore. Absolute highway robbery with that contract extension in 2019. Always hurt, zero effort. On and off the field team cancer. His return to us for to pay him to be always hurt, or sit out games as an activist or go on 9 week holidays to London and Paris to watch his gf play tennis you ask? A grand total of 2 goals last year and this year...for 4 goals. Gets paid $10M in that two year period...a very nice $1.25M / goal. Get rid of him now.

Just disaster of a year...and the damage done to fans losing interest is immense. Less than 8k in attendance....and no the covid exuse is done...as the maple laughts are getting fans and spo did the jays. Ffs the s.hitty argos who shouldn't be at bmo but some run down high school field even get more attendance.

Curtis and Manning and Altidore must go...now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Cheers boys.

Interesting that attendance was down for a Saturday night game compared to the Sunday afternoon game a few weeks ago. People have choice right now & if you are going to go out in the midst of a pandemic, the night choice better be a decent team or its not going to happen.

It will be different next year as the idea of real membership returns & we all get more used to this - have to buy if you want to guarantee.

    ********

Something I noticed - Molinaro's having somebody do a tactics column. They discussed Soteldo this week - called him here really as an assist space creating machine. The column said that he really needs a #9 to play off of. Discussed how Akinola could help with that but really needed a quality #9. NO discussion of Jozy.

I think word has gotten out that Jozy is going. Oh, and for those asking, a buyout can't take place officially until 2021. There will be a cathartic "the following contracts are not being renewed" moment within 48 hours of the last game. But that is unlikely to include Jozy at that point.

If Altidore isn't shown the door, the team will be a disaster next year as well. We are the only team in all of MLS that doesn't have a legit DP striker. Altidore is completely finished. That embarrassing 30 minute display last night was shocking. Literally walked around a bit and touched the ball once. Surely a legit South American or Eastern Euro striker can be bought for a fraction of the cost that would you know, actually run, give Solteldo and Poz someone to play off of and actually score goals. 4 goals in 2 years on the 5th highest MLS salary is not cutting it. And no wonder we are so bad. Watching Shaffelburge, Mullions, Acharra run around aimlessly while teams like Atlanta have skilled strikers is frustrating to say the least. No wonder attendance is in the toilet and sinking fast.

Impressed with Lawrence. He is growing into his role.

Very poor goal to give up (the first one).

Oso should have been subbed, was showing fatigue, but i assume Perez was worried about defensive balance.

the defender (Robinson) dealt with Shaff very well. Good lesson for Shaff

Robinson is very likely Euro bound in January. No shame in being shut down by one of the best in MLS.

and next year the play is to buy seats in the aftermarket for 50 cents on the dollar from season seat holders that can't make any individual games
or buy tickets when tfc has promotion packs available for sale, buy the cheapest seats possible and move to the good seats as there should be many empty seats at bmo next year

ps: don't tell anyone, we want lots of ssh renewing this offseason

PS. As a day one supporter who has seen lots of downs, and brilliant ups, I have completely lost confidence in Manning and Curtis. There seems to be no plan whatsoever - Soteldo acqusition being a perfect case in point - DP worthy player but not the player this team needed, we needed a second DP striker who could play off Pozuelo. Lots more to criticise here and we have all made them, but thats the place to start in the rebuild for me.

yes, exactly. Shaff now knows what the best looks like and that you have to upgrade your angles etc etc

We got everything wrong tactically last night. The players didn't make a huge number of positional or unforced errors, they were just covered perfectly.

Pineda used the press when we tried to play from the back, then switched to a midfield block when we played through the middle. It was really clever and shut down the 433 direct completely.

I think maybe the way to counter it was to switch to a staggered midfield, with an an anchor and a number eight between the lines, so we could advance the ball through the middle of the park, then swing it wide when they dropped into the block, then switch field when they pushed wide again.

But we rode the same offense five games in a row and unlike "we play our system" coaches, Pineda obviously studies his opponents and adapts. I suspect the league is getting past the "make them play our way" mentality, as teams rarely have enough quality to be "all possession" as we used to be or "all press" as Philly used to be.

Teams are throwing out new looks based on situational tactical changes, and that's what we ran into yesterday.

But if you go back and look, aside from Achara's inability to track back defensively, we were pretty solid in most positions. In the second half, you could tell Perez was trying to get us to play tighter as a unit and use short passing to break down their pressing, but we're too sloppy now at the control game to carry it off.

Delgado and Bradley both played pretty well, Osorio played pretty well until his legs went, around minute 60, and we inexplicably left him on.

But our forward line was a total shitshow, Richie was largely ineffective on the flank (again, tired legs maybe). Auro was good defensively but is very much a fullback at this point, not a winger.

I sort of feel like we needed to go to the 5-3-2 with Lawrence-Gonzalez-Auro at the back and maybe Shaff-Laryea wide, as both play both directions pretty well. But we don't have the strike force to pair someone with a false nine, unless Pozuelo plays the entire game just behind Soteldo (who can't hit the broad side of a barn shooting; they're both false nines, really, in that they're natural midfielders).

How much Altidore is paid is moot; it's the roster spot that's the issue, not the money. I don't give a shit about other people's money but I do give a shit about what he's done to help this club to a title, multiple cups and three finals.

So I have nothing but love for the dude and would given him a backup roster spot until he retires, if his deal could be bought out. Ditto with Bradley. And there's not much point bitching about Gonzalez right now; he's too expensive and too inconsistent to be the number one, but he's played really well in the last three games.

We need to get rid of a lot of dead wood. Achara is not starting calibre, not yet. He might be, eventually, if he's not too fragile. But I suspect his read of the game isn't quite fast enough, which is why he keeps getting caught high up the pitch when we're tracking back.

Shaffelburg has skill but Robinson played him onto his weaker foot and wide all night, which is technique. Someone needs to teach him how to cut inside properly and when to do it to avoid being shepherded by a stronger defender or that shit'll happen every game. Again, he looks like he could round into a solid starter but his play is naive, still, and that needs addressing.

Soteldo was pretty awful yesterday. Just one bad decision after another. I see DP quality speed and ball skills, but not a DP quality brain. He has three trailers coming into the box and he's looking for a free man only, which he's not going to get. He has the ball wide and he always takes one more cutback, at least, than is necessary.

When he pulls stuff off it looks amazing but that's because it's all high risk, low return. His shot choices, his crossing choices. It's like he's demanding to influence the game when it isn't going to happen and ignoring the simpler choices that work.

When he eschewed that in the two prior games, he and Shaff and Achara hooked up really well. Yesterday, he kept drifting out of the central channel and wide constantly, instead of when a switch made sense, as if he was trying to force being allowed to play wide left.

I dunno, I just get the sense he's not the guy we need in that position. I know he has 10 assists and that's great, but he plays like a slugger who's always looking for the knockout punch for 90 minutes instead of leaving the low-percentage choices for last-minute desperation or heroics.

Biggest letdown last night was Perez. They were countering whatever we tried and we didn't adjust much. When it was clear they weren't going to play a high line, we should've slowed things down and moved to a shorter buildup using the whole pitch. Instead we tried to bomb it wide and got shut down again and again.

EDIT: And the JMR sub reeked of internal politics. He clearly didn't have confidence in him, or he would have taken off Osorio, who was gassed, instead. The kid clearly isn't ready, but the front office is clearly still pushing him as a commodity. pulling him off after a half-hour sub appearance is just terrible for a kid's confidence.

He had a nice piece of skill and buildup that led to a decent cross in the second half, a nice dispossession and counter, and a nice saving slide tackle on a breakaway, so he wasn't awful or ineffective, just out of his depth positionally, particularly on defense.

Kid could really benefit from a loan to a USL-C team where he plays every week, or maybe League Two/National clubs in England, where the skill level is fairly high but the athleticism and pace are slower. Like Singh, he seems to have speed and technique but very little game sense.

Hated that they took JMR off last night. Dumb thing to do with a kid trying to prove himself. Not making excuses for Perez but about the only thing I can think of is that they are focused on winning the Canadian Championship. Maybe with Poz and Jozy coming on he felt that he needed to get all of his guns on the field at the same time given their lack of playing time together this year. Osorio or Laryea were the obvious victims to be replaced with all they've played lately. It was there for all to see. They were both gassed and at risk of injury with all the miles on them lately but he took the kid off. Makes no sense otherwise.
