Rangnick's record suggests that for Gegenpress to work, everyone has to buy in to playing as a team first, individuals second. So it worked at small clubs and NYRB, because there's not enough individualism to upset the apple cart. And it works at Chelsea and RB Salzburg because their lineups will dominate no matter what they play.
But as soon as it's introduced at a possession club where the players rank themselves, it goes to shit, which is why he managed to get multiple lower level clubs promoted but has never won a title at a higher level (one German cup, many moons ago).
Needs the right player attitudes, and "utterly buying in" seems to be the modus operandi of the absolute best... and those with no alternative. Man Utd is a roster full of headcases, so... TFC redux, basically.
Brrrrr... Baby its cold outside; EDM ECW!
Welcome back jloome! Great insight. As a previous longtime lurker, I have always enjoyed your thoughts and comments.
Your input will always be appreciated by me... please, just a little less... 'if yas stands for nothings, youse falls for anythings' entrenchment.
I think you were missed in the RPB Forum.
As a side note... Total Football verses Gegenpress? Preference? Quick thought.
