Default 2021 General TFC/MLS Banter (no transfer/roster discussion)

This thread is a catch-all for general banter not specifically related to transfer rumours.
MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto

What's the over/under on a lockout? Is there a real possibility of teams folding if they can't find a financial solution with the players?

Some MLS teams (the ones who sell well) will have a third jersey this season (not those one-off Parley jerseys, but regular third kits)

MLS, Beckham’s Miami Lose ‘Inter’ Name Trademark Ruling to Inter Milan

They haven't lost the name, yet. Just the first trademark objection they filed. Still more court battles in progress

Somebody on that thread asked why not every team and Maurer pointed out Atlanta sells more shirts then some teams combined.

Buried in that discussion - long sleeve shirts are coming back.

Here's an article from Maurer from last year about the MLS jersey process. It's a pretty good read.

^ Shocker. It’s almost like running a limited number of kit templates and having a sole source supplier leads to a dearth of interest.

That is a nice looking stadium. The MLS has quite a few nice stadiums now.

It will be interesting to see any changes they make to BMO in preparation for the 2026 world cup.

There's too many stadiums already in MLS that look a lot better than BMO, and also offer nicer views to the supporters.
I hate the non-closed (American style) stadium designs compared to the all 4 sides almost evenly closed (European style) stadium designs.

At BMO we have a side almost 100% open, and another one at least 4 times less higher/wider than the 2 main sides (running the lenght of the pitch). For me there's nothing to like about this design.

They skimped when initially building it and have been playing catch-up ever since. But I can hardly blame the initial attempt in that there were no guarantees this was going to work. Let’s be happy the location is good, TBH that’s the most important factor. Also, as much as I’d like to see TFC have a nice stadium I’m completely against using a single cent of tax dollars to do it.

But otherwise, I agree. Having an enclosed stadium to protect from the elements makes the most sense. Maybe we’ll be the first to have a true “next gen” stadium in MLS. Or soothing that’s closer to RB Arena but in the 30-40k seating range.

I would not say they skimped per say, it was more that it was built as a no frills stadium for $60,000,000 as part of the successful 2007 U20 World Cup bid. The main tenet at the time could have been the Argonauts but they were committed to the Rogers Centre after two abandoned attempts to built a stadium for various reasons. MLS soccer was an unknown at the time and no one had a clue how it was going to take in our city. A stadium would have never been built just for a pro soccer team and I am pretty sure that MLSE would have had little interest in operating a team out of the Rogers Centre. The kickstart was the Beckham signing and the rest is history as we all know.

Sure there have been amazing stadiums built since then in the league but BMO is our home and I truly can not wait til we can all get back. I miss the dam place.

If the Argos would move out then they could close the north end of the stadium so it matches the south end. However they haven't been filling the place over the last few years so there is no incentive to expand BMO.

There is money committed to stadium upgrades to WC20206 sites - media & general stadium improvements. Those sites have not been chosen yet but it would be almost impossible to not pick BMO.

If nothing else, I fully expect them to redo the concourse on the West side. My dream/hope is a north side expansion.

One other thing that comes into play here:

The CNE might not survive another year. That land is worth a hell of a lot. I would not be surprised if the Food building & the "streets" that are a current barrier to development one south & north ends no longer exist in 5 years.

Couple this with MLSE having a track record of developing land around sporting facilities and you can see 2026 being a starter to a major densification.

Not their jersey. Adidas made a t-shirt like that for every team. Here's TFC's

I think this set of shirts was accidentally posted early, since I haven't seen them on the adidas site since that day the cf montreal was posted, so they probably took the whole collection down. I got these images from an archive page, can see the montreal, tfc and whitecaps ones https://webcache.googleusercontent.c...&ct=clnk&gl=ca

i guess montreal isn't the only team rebranding. Chicago is going to rebrand again with another new crest after the latest horrible crest re do. Question is are we ready for a rebrand?
