Toronto FC's Julian Dunn, Liam Fraser, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, Jayden Nelson, Noble Okello, Jordan Perruzza, Ralph Priso, Rocco Romeo and Jacob Shaffelburg were all on the provisional roster. But none made the final list.
"It's an unfortunate situation that happened in Toronto. that has definitely impacted the selection process,'' said Biello.
Watching the U23s is sad to think that if they just had the TFC kids they'd be playing the US tonight instead of Mexico.
All of a sudden they wouldn't need to use a midfielder as a CB. Canada's midfield desperately misses Fraser and Priso, and up front aside from Buchanon we have noone with game breaking skill and you have to think Nelson, Shaffelburg and Perruzza would have made a positive impact.
Ironically, Dias started tonight. Doesn’t look out of place but unfortunately (or fortunately?) he reads and plays the game at a level beyond most of his teammates. It’s a final pass crying out for a runner.
They’re frustrating the Mexicans for the most part but also extremely lucky not to have conceded as we have a few guys who are downright naive defenders.
Priso being there and playing over Metcalfe would be huge.
I think Metcalfe has been reasonable for the most part. But I agree, a player like Priso playing next to Baldismo could be a really solid midfield. Given what he did in USL last year, Peruzza would seem like a real asset too.
I’ll withhold judgment on any of our other youth players cause I have no idea what sort of level they are on compared to what we see on the field.
But you’d figure we’d be contributing 2-3 guys minimum.
I long for the day where Canada can just play a game against Mexico and we don't need to bunker down and pray for a goal.
Honestly, who knows when it will happen but CMNT v Mexico with today's Davies, David et al, and I don't see us parking the bus. Mexico would still control but we would cause massive problems if they tried to play us like they normally do.
This U23 squad was missing 3-5 key players from TFC, at a massive disadvantage for location, and time of year (in the liga mx season) after really not playing for a year.
The U23 did what it was expected to do & get to the one off game.
For 70 minutes they were competitive with the best team in the region (Tata Martino has been focused on the Olympics since he started with ElTri).
No wailing & gnashing of teeth over that result (unlike in the US where their soccer media is having a melt down - they have been so spoiled by the Hex approach that they do not see how competitive CONCACAF has become - they think they should be the Germans of this area, always going through & don't realise they are actually the English - usually getting through, overhyping themselves but not actually all that good even thought they spend a ton of money)
The important takeaway is that both Canada and the US DNQ for the Olympics so the Ayo sweepstakes march on...
Off season so shitty this thread has become Olympic U-23 talk
I'm just impressed we managed to get 60+ pages out of absolutely nothing.
im really enjoying the daily pictures of the grass growing at BMO
I see Jozy is on Twitter trying to get Sergio Aguero to come to TFC. I would consider giving Jozy a lifetime contract if he managed that.
