Some the greatest fears teams could have is becoming a reality for some.
Nearly 50 Alabama football players the took part in 'should' go into quarantine following at least 5 positive COVID-19 tests. It has been confirmed that at least one took part in voluntary team workouts. All leagues and teams have to be 110% sure about how they are moving forward to return to action

I have to say ML$E suspending the final payment was silly. Yeah that's really gonna make a difference at this point....

They really need to sweeten the pot if it's going to be a credit. Not just say it'll be the same price, or the same minus that last payment. IDK maybe throw a jersey in or something, or a bonus credit for 2022 or something like that. Manning said he'd do right by us on his conference call. Hope he means it.

MLSE is doing the right thing for Leafs season ticket holders, so I think it'll eventually be OK. The Leafs are offering a refund for games not played (which they already rolled into an advance for 2020-21), or a small food credit if you stick it out.

“If you currently have money on account with MLSE for 2020‑21 seasons seat payments and would like to request a refund for the amount on account, you may do so by completing the online refund request form.

If you elect to keep money on account with MLSE, as a show of MLSE’s appreciation you will be provided with a Food & Beverage and Special Merchandise Credit at Scotiabank Arena equal to 5% of the funds held on account.”

I know the info has been out for a while now but I was just reading all the fine print of the different stages of re-opening of Ontario and Toronto won't even be out of Stage 1 anytime soon it looks like. Then once finally in Stage 2 we have to be in that stage for some time to prove we can move to Stage 3. Even when we get to Stage 3 down the road there is still this note in the Stage 3 info saying "Large public gatherings such as concerts, night clubs and sporting events will continue to be restricted for the foreseeable future." so pretty safe for MLSE to start addressing this with us season seat members. We won't be getting the ok to have any games this year as we all thought. Even the bigger gatherings such as churches in Stage 2 are only being allowed 30% capacity when they are allowed to open. I am assuming even once BMO Field is allowed to open they will be told to limit capacity which is even something Manning said would likely happen when they are allowed to have fans at the games that not all fans will be able to come right away and it will be staggered approach. That will be a nightmare to manage telling some fans they can come and some they can't.

A very smart guy I know in the medical community says that:

-if, if, the numbers keep improving (as they have generally in Canada, although Toronto has been persistently unable to turn the corner)
    - and,
    - if, if, there is no second wave later in the year

then there will be a general return to work (and concerts and sports) in November.

But expect to have to wear masks for a while

(This is the absolute best case scenario. He thinks there will be a second wave fwiw, and we are more likely looking at general reopening this time next year. He expects it to die out before a vaccine arrives. Just one man's guess.)

You will know we are getting close when OTHER countries stop requiring us to quarantine if we visit them. (US excepted because of the politics of our border with them)

I read everything above. I just wanted to mention there’s a very significant increase of Covid cases in many US states again. (E.g. Arizona hospitals reaching crisis levels.) That will affect the level of risk for our athletes heading to the US for training and “tournaments” that have been announced.

Also it will be hard to keep the borders closed forever. (Although I’m a US American & and am fine with keeping them closed indefinitely.) Eventually the disease may creep back into Canada from the US, affecting the timelines discussed above.

The people who look at this stuff to figure out patterns (epidemiologists) were surveyed as to what their behavior was going to be in the next few months and year. The largest amount for "unlikely to do in the next 18 months" - sports events.

That having been said, look for 6 foot distancing crowds to become a thing - South Korean baseball has been trying that out.

All this while US universities attempt to reopen and spikes reoccur - see Alabama football players.

I find the predictions have a higher level of certainty than makes sense to me. They all seem to be centred on the track of the Spanish flu in 1918. That was a “monster second wave” pandemic, that was mostly gone after 12-18 months. But every virus mutates differently, and how it strengthens and degrades, and how big the waves are, and how fast the waves come, seems kind of random (we know shockingly little about viruses, we don’t even know if they are “alive”)

This could be mostly over, or go on for 8 years (or until a vaccine), or anything in between. It could fool us into thinking it is gone, then explode back. Nobody has any idea, really.

I would note that the first wave of this thing has crested/receded after about two months in every geography it hits, regardless of the level of isolation in that geography. This was not the prediction. Isolation has seemingly impacted the number of victims but not the time of active spread in a community. Herd immunity is seemingly not what is causing the numbers to drop (although one question is whether hundreds of millions of us actually have had it and don’t know it). It also seems that far more people are resistant to the virus than was expected.

The problem also is with the stats in general that have been collected. Digging into them more now the experts are finding all kinds of holes. Some of the deaths reported in NYC were deaths that happened in hospitals dealing with COVID and not due to COVID but got added by the thousands to the toll. Areas in Italy apparently lumping in traditional flu and H1N1 stats along with the COVID stats skewing the numbers because they were overwhelmed at the time. And so on and so on....and the public health experts can only go on what is in front of them at the time and if skewed then comes the inaccurate predictions. Some hospitals in the US cancelled all kinds of elective surgeries and the COVID cases never came and those hospitals are now in a financial mess trying to stay open. And when it comes to stats you can make it look like anything you really want to. Just ask any of us business people that use stats to sell to customers. The media has their way to make things look just as grim as they want to and create a story/panic for the public to boost their ratings. Domestic homicides in some areas have doubled and same with suicides related to anxiety over what info the media is putting out there as well as the restrictions of movement, loss of wages, etc. Just one big mess. Just like most here are saying there is a ton of guesswork being used and it changes daily.

The other side is that many places, including Italy, did not count COVID-19 deaths unless they were in hospitals. Nursing home deaths weren't counted. Also a lot of COVID-19 deaths were mis-classed as "pneumonia," particularly in the early days. So there isn't consistent skewing one way or another. All COVID-19 statistics are problematic. The only thing we do know accurately enough is that countries that clamped down hard and early and well organized like New Zealand did very well, ones that tried to keep everything open and depend on herd immunity (like Sweden) did poorly and are now acknowledged as failed strategies.

This thing is not over! Not by a fucking long shot. It's insane for some sports leagues to try and come back when we're not even close to having a vaccine ready.

MLS's idea of gathering all teams and having them play inside something like a hermetically sealed bubble is ludicrous. There's absolutely no guarantee anyone's going to feel safe inside this gilded cage. All it takes is but ONE person to get infected, and everything is turned upside down. Especially in a place like Florida, where their sad, sorry excuse of leadership is allowing businesses to open up without any checks or balances because, FUCK YOUR FEE-FEES! They're just asking for trouble to happen.

I understand the need for sports right now, as the world is so full of suck, and we need some pleasant distractions from all this suck. But I'd rather just wait things through until this is all dealt with in a rightful manner. Having athletes die because we need amusement and leagues needing money is not worth it.

I'm sure there's all kinds of variation in individual cases. But the Financial Times and others have done good analyses of "excess deaths" for various countries and regions, compared with previous years. Looking at that in relation to the official COVID-19 deaths, it's clear they've been undercounted more often than not.

Some very sad personal & related news about that, from Germany, that I haven't wanted to talk about yet. Another day.

A couple of US states never really finished a first wave, and are increasing. Meanwhile a couple of countries, including Taiwan right next to the epicentre, did a great job of containing the virus, with much less impact on the economy.

Interesting news about the tourney. I am sure not everyone is happy in the MLS camps as much as everyone wants MLS back again. My question is....so after the tourney then what? Not like they can go back to any regular play. Do they just call it a season after that?

From an email from MLSE that just arrived announcing the tournament in Florida:

Please look for a follow-up communication from TFC's ticketing department tomorrow with details relating to your membership as we continue to work through the impact on the 2020 MLS schedule.

They really should have announced ticketing plans before dropping this announcement today.
I like the tournament concept. But am far more curious about what MLSE is doing with ticketing.
I really think the best approach is to say this years tix are cancelled. Can refund or credit to next year.
In event fans are allowed in again, you will have first opportunity for tix. If you do not purchase seats for these (theorhetical) games, your seats are still secure for next season.
I really don't see how this is so difficult.
Either fans aren't allowed, and if they are it'll be reduced capacity, spread out. We wont all have our seats i imagine.

Ticketing plans will give us an indication of how many games the league expects to still get in.

Regardless, its pie in the sky to think there will be fans in stands by August.

Well that email that just went out was pointless.
We'll see what the follow up is. I assume MLS is just trying to figure out how to play as many games as possible in front of fans.

Email at 4ish from Manning essentially announced tournament and said an email to ssh will be going out later today.

Its not what was in the email. Just rather you created an expectation there would be news today. Then you wait til 4 to send that email, that said nothing that wasn't already out there already re tournament or groups etc.

And you doubled down and said an email would go out today with info for ssh. So now you have to send an email today and it has to have some significant news, or else why all the delays? TFC created these expectations themselves. If you're going to say nothing, then don't tell us to expect an announcement.

Ok this is weird. It looks like I go the same email yesterday about the tournament with the same line about the update on season tix, except saying tomorrow (which is now today). But I haven't gotten anything from TFC at all today.

They really need to fix their communications.
