There was a spell where both Giovinco and Altidore were unavailable and the subs did admirably, all things considered. Edwards plugged in for Morrow pretty much seamlessly. Lot of those circumstances happened and we were lucky. In 2018, it felt like the exact opposite.
We probably lost about a dozen points on defensive blunders that wouldn't have happened if we had a full back line.
We also probably lost half a dozen points to incompetent finishing.

There's a lot of talk about depth and lack of it. What people are not realizing is MLS depth isn't extended to key positions. You can't have that kind of depth on an MLS budget. people need to stop expecting that,

Looks like the Bez move is happening. Rumor that Ali Curtis is getting lined up as replacement.

Immediate gut reaction: I'm good with Ali Curtis. Later on I'm sure I'll think of some reasons why this is terrible.

Why would Bez leave for Columbus? Isn't Columbus possibly being relocated?
He's not gonna have half the bank that he did here to play around with.

Also I hope we get an interim guy and not a permanent rush find.

Crew business all settled now, new owners spending a lot for new stadium, etc but will have plenty for DPs.

Sources: Tim Bezbatchenko is leaving Toronto FC to become president of Columbus Crew SC. TFC are in advanced discussions with former New York Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis to replace Bezbatchenko as GM. @MichaelArace1 was first on Bez to Columbus.

I can fuck with this. I really rate Ali.

Also this guy fired Petke after winning the shield iirc. Vanney is not safe.

Blow up with Marsch over direction of the team IIRC. Marsch wanted to go young and Curtis wanted to keep vets. Think the blow up was during the Dax McCarty trade.

President is the only logical move for Bez but I still think he's not got the right skill set for what that team will need in a President.

Or maybe nothing coming back from Columbus. Not one of us know what Bez's contract says about this, and it's clearly a promotion.

What has Curtis been dong the last two years? Seems like a long time to be on the beach.

It's like going from being a good player at Real Madrid, to being the star at Bilbao. I guess it's a promotion in title but the organization is still lesser.

I wish that were as true as you make it sound.

More like moving from Eindhoven to Alkmaar.

Its a promotion in responsibility and the opportunity is a league exec's dream - remake your hometown team, not from scratch but with a clean slate and owners willing to invest (although not MLSE invest - CBus is going to remain a mid- to low tier spending team).

I'm interested in the direction we move with Curtis, especially regarding the 3 DPs.

I remember many members here and fans elsewhere were sceptical or downright dismissive of Bez in 2014-2015. Something about him made me feel like he'd figure it out, and he did. Thanks for the great years Tim.

Well it just means we aren’t taking them up on their ridiculous purchase option (that was set too high). Maybe we’ll get him for a lesser amount?

I don’t want to be one of those people who disses someone once they leave (or have one foot out the door). But...last year, and even so far this close season, really made me wonder if Bez actually just got lucky once.

At any rate, I wish him well if he goes. I find myself agreeing with Og on his skill set though.

Did Ali not get caught up in the infamous town hall meeting with fans/supporters that someone recorded?

Yea, first thing he did was fire Petke and hire Marsch which led to the town hall.

Word was always that he was acting on the mothership in Austria's orders in getting rid of Petke.

FWIW but it basically sounds like various meetings people had with Anselmi & Tim L

Curtis got them through that and they won the Supporters shield.

He was let go a year later.

Very interesting article. Seems that Ali Curtis is willing to make major moves where he finds them warranted. (Although as mentioned above, some of that might have been on orders from Austria.)

Then on the other hand we have Bill Manning, who has said that roster continuity is one of the most important factors in MLS success. (He's said that in the past; and again during the recent year-end interviews.)

Obviously if this deal goes through, then it's also because Bill Manning is happy to land Curtis. But under Manning he may adopt more of a slow & steady style than he showed with the NYRB. In that vein, Manning might also be interested in some version of "The Plan" that Curtis brought to NYRB.

Would not have a problem with this if Manning had only one job like he did when TFC won everything in 2017, but he since last season he also has to look after the fucken Argos therefore not being able to give his full attention to TFC so now they are basically going to rely on this Curtis guy who has not been a general manager for a few years now , why no one hired him after the Red Bulls is worrisome, I don’t know getting the feeling TFC is going to suck just like last season and just like those early years before these guys are fucking it up again before our eyes !
