Unless something has changed, it's not a cap hit, just a buyout. It's only a cap hit if it comes after the first roster deadline, making his contract for this year count towards the cap.

So MLSE eats a million to get rid of him. Adios.

We looked off all last year, like the locker-room belief was done. Aside from Beta being a terrible decision (and my understanding is he wasn't looking for more, just the same, and the wanted him to take a cut), Akexte was also a terrible decision. I dunno, maybe Bez saw the writing on the wall and that the view of his personnel choices being as magic as his knowledge of the rules had eroded.

Pending any new defenders I wonder if this locks us in a 4-4-2 diamond.

Glad this happened and the club is taking swift action rather than letting things continue to get worse.

Curtis is being thrown right into the gauntlet and so far so good. Looking forward to see what he can do here.

Are 100% sure the 2019 buyout wasn't used on Akexte?

gvdw always was a troubled kid. signed to AJAX at 7 yrs old, kicked out by 13, then made his way back up and most of us know the rest of this story. one my favorites to watch as i started getting into soccer and i followed his career around the world...until today. screw him if he cant fall in line. maybe a bit of time in colorado or san jose would do him good.
we need a massive signing to wash all this away.

Well Curtis' first move is pretty much a slam dunk.

I expected more from GVDW last season but still rate him over Auro.

VdW was very good in CCL. But that was it.

I am not sure we should ever have a guy who started a WC final, or 5 years at a PSG. Giovinco, you look at his background in Italy, he wasn’t like vdW, he never had a place.

vdW had a place, and this will never compare. This league is too far from that level for a guy like that to be happy.

He is the guy who belonged in Qatar, not VV.

800 and 835 I believe respectively, either way with that and Aketxe gone, that is 2 million right there. Perhaps we can get the number 2 allocation pic too...lol.

Would like to see a legit third striker and a Vazquez replacement ideally. Maybe we can trade VdW for Beitasour, but that is unlikely. #freeRaheem

    Crazy idea of the day:

Mesut Ozil is unsettled at Arsenal right now, is he not? Let's go in for him. Sign him to a 1 year TAM deal now, then upgrade him to a DP next year.

To be fair you could say the same about the team as a whole. I was counting on him having a better year this year, a lot of guys take a year to adjust to MLS and our back line was a s--t show last year, I think along side Ciman and Mavinga GVDW would have been able to attack more and we could have seen more of his skill set. Shame it didn't work out

He is even more disinterested and at least as lazy as VDW.

If somehow this becomes Miazga or Larin then this deal will go down in MLS lore.

Van der Wiel farewell Instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/BtANy69g4SU/

"Dear Toronto. I called you home and I was so happy that I had finally found a place that felt like that. Year one had ups and downs but I found my joy back and I could not wait to get started this new season. I was ready to give it all. Unfortunately year two will never come due to differences with the coaching staff. I just want to win and do that no matter what the consequences are. I guess that mentality was a little too much for them and they decided they do not need me for this season. Teammates and fans, I will miss you guys. All the best, Gregory van der Wiel."

    Either:

He already has a target team outside of MLS - they only want to pay so much - he is going to burn down the bridge even more in order to reduce the selling price.

    or

    He is receiving no advice

Either way, he is coming across as really stupid

I wonder if the match where he just sat in the 6 yard box while Vancouver passed it around and scored was what he considers winning.

Adios VDW. He really didn’t leave any mark on TFC and now is gone without a trace.

Not exactly an off-season of just a few tweaks like they had thought at the end of the year. Sometimes when things start to implode it is like a chain reaction.

Don't think this qualifies as a melt down. If anything it's a gift.

I'm hoping for Ike Opara and Matt Miazga plus a back-up striker. This would move Zaveleta to TFC2.

I'd agree. Bad attitude fucking up harmonious locker room. If he were a great player, awesome, but his lack of motivation was apparent.

Apparently that's because he's been moved out to the wing this season under the new manager and it's not his preferred position; but imagine him in the VV role, spraying passes around. He'd be great.

In his very first interview with club he told the fans he lost his passion for the game. He's both brutally honest and/or low in social intelligence (and emotional it seems.) Glad Curtis his removing him from the team. Mental is everything.

Sure looked like you wanted to win at all costs last year :eyesrollbackintomyhead:

CAM is the most important position in MLS and should take priority.

It was a central attacking Magician named Victor Vazquez who took us to the next level in 2017. In 2018, the top 2 teams had the best CAM's.

The top 4 teams in the east have the best central attacking midfielders. Almiron, Kaku, Acosta, Moralez. These guys break down the other teams defence an make plays that others cannot. In a parity league like MLS; this is the difference. The same can be said in the West with the top 2 teams having Valeri and Loderio.

    2018 cup winners had Almiron.
    2018 shield winners had Kaku.
    2017 shield winners had Vazquez.
    2017 cup winners had Vazquez.

This team is going no where the current midfield. Delgado, Osorio and Bradley are good supporting pieces in the midfield but they don't break down teams in the final third like a Kaku or healthy Vazquez.

Priority has to be CAM. When Vazquez went down last year; this team fell of the map. The midfield is way below the top 10 in MLS right now.

Glad this happened now, not after the season started.

But we are as unsettled as we could possibly be. Of our five or six most important/veteran players... in the last two weeks, two threw fits over their contract, one left them team suddenly, and one got booted off the team. Plus we just traded a glue piece away.

There is not a lot of time to get this straightened out, there may be more moves out (at a minimum the possible summer departures of Seba/Jozy loom) and there will be a bunch of new faces soon...

So so disappointed Hagglund was moved and not Zavaleta. Because Zavaleta is the most terrible and his salary is ridiculous. Nepotism lives!
