If Seba leaves can we finally reach the consensus that this club is imploding?

There is nothing unusual or unethical about that. He’s been told he’s not getting a new contract. This is what he should be doing. Our management is just stupid to think they have any leverage over a player of his level. TFC is not the only game in town for him.

OK, so let me get this straight in my head.
Curtis/MLSE want to impose a lower cost model? Why exactly would MLSE want this?

They are hesitant to provide Seba (and Jozy) with a new contract right now, and now Seba is calling their bluff with this whole Middle East club thing?
We've lost potentially the best playmaker in the league in Vazquez (when fit), we lost 2 starting defenders in Hagguland and vdW, and now our star striker is probably leaving. That's 4 starters, we also have no real idea as to any replacements, rumours or otherwise.

    WTAF?

Do we think that Curtis/MLSE are going to replace these guys with relative replacements, or is this part of a cost cutting model that will leave our team under-powered for the next few seasons? I believe I read somewhere that curtis wants to work on the acedemy and bring players through, which is great, if you the raw talent there to do so. We don't.

Is this a we won the cup once, and we're done thing? I just don't get it.

Wasn’t there talk before that Bez had had discussions with Seba and Jozy about contract extensions? Maybe his leaving is related to a change in direction and he was unable to make good on those promises.

Don’t think we can lay this at the feet of Curtis. Seems like decisions were made before he came and at a higher level.

None of us get it. Maybe VdW wasnt just being bitter, he said they dont want to win.

Wouldn't be Toronto sports without this sort of bullshit though eh

Imploding, no. Full scale rebuild, yes.

We need to get younger. Our core is aging and this would have happened either now or next season.

    Yes.

But I still find this hard to believe. Manning prioritized CCL again. Losing Vazquez, VdW, Giovinco in one window is crazy. Whoever comes in wont have enough time to settle in and learn Vanneys tactics etc.

I think that would be the smallest challenge of a competent player. It's not like Vanney's some tactical wizard. Getting to know teammates tendencies, however, would be the stumbling block.

All this talk is reminding me of how the NYRB supporters were losing it when Curtis started making changes around the club and making several unpopular decisions. It turned out that they won the Supporter's Shield that year. I'm willing to give Curtis some slack this year and see how the rebuild will go next year. However, I think we all have to swallow the bitter pill that the window of greatness for this group of players has closed. At least we'll always have 2017 to sustain us through whatever rebuilding lies ahead. I've decided that for this season I'm not going in with any expectations - this could turn out great or terrible, but I resolve to enjoy the ride.

Not that I would do it but is all this coming out after that 30 day opt out of CCL tickets has passed?

I agree with this totally. I just wish it would have started last summer to get a jump on it.

    But hindsight is 20/20 obviously.

Whenever interest in the 3 DP's was shown, Toronto FC had the same mantra. "This is what its like when you have worldclass players."

    Well...

This is what its like we you have world class players

    ***

Maybe true ...maybe not. We've seen weirder things before become true and less weird things not happen.

We can talk and maybe will about how devastating this would/will be for Toronto FC.

BUT, the shockwave this move would cause in the league would be huge. Seba is arguably the best striker the league has ever seen. He is the model from which Atlanta learned from to create their model. For him to go because a supposed "spender club" decided to negotiate without taking into account what markets are out there would put this league firmly in its place.

If I was Garber, I would be on the phone right now to Manning saying, "Hey, what's going on here? Anything we can do to keep this asset here?" Not because losing Seba is a problem - the problem is the myth of the league as buyers and sellers is being shown to be untrue.

    That affects TV contracts.

The pressure on TFC to get a BIG signing in response would be huge.

The journos have no more inside information. Its just same articles recycled from one reporter to the next. The only one that actually dug for news was Kurt Larson, I miss him.

I think there is no point in complaining. Odds are Giovinco wanted to go for a while no matter what he said. He would obviously stay if we paid huge but I think he is after as much $$$ as possible and that wasn't going to happen in MLS. It's shitty but it happens everywhere in sports. For most athletes money is king.

The fact that none of the TFC journalists have sources within the club is sad. They never break news unless it's been handed to them by the club.

Most news comes from this board a few days before the Toronto media even has a whisper of things.

Seba leaving will also have a huge effect on the more casual fans, leading to lower revenue from the stands.

For beat reporters, this is true for most of the league, unfortunately. Only exceptions right now are in Philly & DC & Orlando.

The league wide guys like Tenorio still get out scoops.

I cant think of any teams, anywhere in the world who go into their hard earned Champions League with the mindset to rebuild.
