    Default Gio's new contract

An excerpt from Todays Toronto Sun which is a little concerning.

Giovinco has approached TFC about extending his contract beyond 2019.
“I already talk, but they said it’s not the moment (for contract talks),” Giovinco told the Sun. “For them, that’s not a problem, for me it is a little bit. I want to know my future. I have family. I’m 31 years old. For what I do for the city, I think I deserve it, no?”
    He continued.
“For them it’s not a problem, for me it’s starting to be a problem … I already said I want to stay here forever … If not, I have to think about other options.”

read that too, but it doesn't concern me much.

I just read it as not doing the athlete cliche of "I'm confident we'll get something done....just focusing on the season....etc."
Seba is obviously comfortable speaking in English now, but I think he was just saying it like it is, rather than sounding aggressive/uncertain about negotiations.

Question is also what salary should he get beyond 2019? He'll be 32 years old. Do we want to tie him down with a huge bag of cash till he's 36?

If he wins us the Champions League, give him whatever he wants

5 year extension, 10 million per year doesn't matter to me, its not my money. There won't be a better use of a DP spot

    This is funny.
I agree, they should dangle that carrot in front of him.
score 2 or more tomorrow in Mexico, we'll give you a 5 yr contract.

The thing i like about gio is that he is transitioning his game to provider. As he ages - that role would suit him well - question is - who is he providing to? We brought him in to score goals - at a certain point - if no one else is scoring - the shit will fall on him from all angles.

funny you mention that.....it also says in the same article that he is doing so because of Vazquez's absence....so its maybe not totally by his choice, but he is definitely "all in" for what's best for the team.....

I would say extend it 3 years with an option for the 4th. That should be long-term enough for him without hamstringing us too much going forward.

But at some point we will def. need a new DP-level forward once Jozy starts to slow down a bit (because we don't really have anyone fo that caliber waiting in the wings).

Maybe the new CBA will just have 2 more DP slots and it won't matter.

Think it's a classless move to take his contract issue with the club public the day before the biggest game in club history, though he did it in the classiest way possible (if that makes any sense).

Regardless, I thought Giovinco was way overpaid when we signed him but that after the numbers he's been putting up he is worth 7.2m/y.

His numbers have, however, been diminishing year over year and he's seemingly become more injury prone. Part of me is tempted to think that the club should let his contract run out and let the club transition from his era to a new one in 2020 and part of me thinks he should get a 2-year extension on the same pay, but with a crap ton of performance-related bonuses.

Overall, I think the club needs to remember that you don't pay people in the future for things they've done in the past, which I'm sure is part of D'Amico's argument given Giovinco's history with TFC.

Edit: I think the fact that the club think "it's not the right time" to extend his contract even though they are renewing nearly everyone else and it would have zero ramifications for the cap suggests that they see the need to transition out aging stars at some point or another and want flexibility (can you imagine Seba on like 9m/y until he's 34/35). The club has an issue imo in that they've found such perfect fits in players like Jozy and Seba that it's gonna be hard to transition them out when the time inevitably comes.

He hasn't scored in the run of play since last August. He is a free kick specialist and is great at that and setting up Altidore, but I think a one-year extension max. two is all TTFC should offer.

I am glad in a twisted sort of way that this has sprung up now. With it being published Seba will know that this is his time to really make a statement. He can virtually call his own shots regarding a contract if he takes control tonight and wins us the title. I fully expect a motivated Seba on the pitch tonight.

I see someone much more multi talented and skilled than a "free kick specialist."

I don't think his intention was to make an issue out of his contract with reporters Bautista-style.....more likely is that he was asked a question and answered it.....Seba doen't seem like the kinda guy to get wrapped up in controversy....we really have no evidence of that at all in his time here.....

Of the 15 biggest goals in club history, Seba has either unlocked the play, or scored the goal, in about 12 of them.

This is inevitable. All big player contract situations become talking points 18 months before they end.

Spot on. Seba does “Seba Things” and well, Larson writes “Larson things”.

Sign him on a 2 + 1 on a front end salary loaded with performance bonuses.

Bottom line is we can't let him leave after 4 short years and then go off to another MLS club or China or Italy...He needs to be Red til it's over which is obv what he wants.
After everything TFC has achieved while he's here it'll be deplorable if he leaves on bad terms.

There are both sides to argument whether to extend Giovinco's contract. I'm just not sure if he's worth 7 mil a year at age 34 and onward.

A lot of Giovinco's goal scoring talents rely on pace and agility. Eventually Father Time will catch up.

On other hand, if Giovinco's willing to transition into more of a playmaker role rather than second striker, he'll have a starting role with TFC till he's 36-37. He's certainly got the tools to a playmaker, and guys like Federico Higuain are transitioning into more of a playmaker than second striker. Thierry Henry with NYRB did the same thing before retiring.

It looks like Giovinco and his agent is just posturing for some serious contract negotiation, probably happen in the summer. I'm not worried about Giovinco leaving Toronto anytime soon, but I also trust TFC FO to have a Plan B if Giovinco does leave this summer or at the end of the season.

He will be getting some serious offers from China and Mexico.

We should look at a 3 year deal with a 4th being performance based.

well whatever it may be i hope he's focused on tonight not his contract. As some people mentioned he performs tonight and the cup is raised it wont be an issue. IMO

I agree... Pay Giovinco the money.... minimum $10,000,000 per year. Not only he brough back pride to TFC but also with MLS SOCCER.

Let him retire as a TFC.....

MLSE should sign him before the end of the year before he can walk away without any transfer fee..

Not surprised Mexican teams would be interested in Giovinco

I will be very interested to see how this turns out in the long run and even more the approach the MLSE board takes to DP spending, what they are comfortable with moving forward considering the ROI. This was Tim's vision and he was able to sell it to them but as we all know there are a handful of examples of MLS success without spending anywhere near as much as the Reds have. I guess time will tell , how this plays out, because this won't just be in Bez and Manning hands.

I dont see how or why TFC would spend less money. Even with our large payroll they probably cover more than that cost just on tickets sales alone.

I think we need to keep Giovinco and Altidore. I recommend we trade or sell Bradley for a younger version of grit. there has to be someone better than Bradley with less money.

S@$@## T, If Atlanta can spend 15 million on a 19 year what will stop MLSE to spend something like that... also, what is 10 million for Giovinco based on the other stupid salaries MLSE spends on the Leafs and Raptors.
