^This is official now. Not just Iniesta, Lukas Podolski also at Kobe.

J League has predominantly had Brazilians and Koreans as foreign players, but has quietly become very serious about name Euro players the last few months. Fernando Torres went there last summer. (In the 90s Japan was the world retirement league, all kinds of guys like Gary Lineker and Toto Schillaci finished up there)

Pity Martinez is a pretty good replacement for Almiron, not sure how ATL manages to secure these guys but I don't see them falling off too much next year

I have a possible explanation: probably Tata Martino had/has the best relations by far in the Latin-American football world, among the MLS managers.
So, even if Tata will be gone by the next season, through him Atlanta cemented the best realations by far with the Latin-American football world among the MLS teams. And these relations will last many years to come...

Cincinnati paid $450k of GAM, $300k of TAM, international roster spot, a percentage of future transfer fee and an extra $75k of GAM if Waston obtains certain performance stats. This is in addition to the $200K GAM and $250k TAM paid to Atlanta for Greg Garza.
They also have the bonus of having a USL team for a few years prior to entering MLS.

The amount of help these expansion teams get is kind of ridiculous. They are instantly competitive if not even better than some current teams struggling. Wish TFC had this kind of help when we started.

Mo had no idea what he was doing, true. However, we also had huge requirements to field a minimum number of Canadians, something that was very unrealistic in 2007.

Yeah with Americans counting at the time as Internationals the Reds were really behind the eight ball. It meant a lot of Canadians who had no business being in MLS made the club. Comparing today's expansion setup compared to the one Mo faced was night and day, an apples to oranges type of thing.

I would not say Mo had no clue, he made the moves he thought were needed, considering if it were not for a 5-0 disaster on rainy night in New Jersey, a match I attended this team would have made the post-season six years earlier than it did. It was some of Mo's shady back room deals that bothered me, getting a detailed account of it from a former player was eye opening.

I have no time for defending Mo Johnston. How often in life are people given so many opportunities in life to succeed in the face of repeated and absolute failure?

There are so many jaw dropping examples of dysfunction during that era it’s not even worth debating. Harder setup than today’s expansion teams? Sure. So hard we should finish out of the playoffs every year when 60% of the teams were qualifying? Nope.

    Mo sucked /thread

Looks like they're going to go for a Bavarian identity. It will be something different for MLS, that's for sure.

When the Auro Jr's and Drew Moor's and Nick Deleon's of the word are bench players (although one will probably start) MLS is in good shape. I don't even care to do the math on how all of this will work financially as the salary rules keep changing.

D.C United acquiring another promising top Argentina midfielder. Another impressive resume and only 21.

I don't think they would win it because their turnover is going to be too high and the CCL is going to suprise the hell out of them.

BUT, Atlanta is indicating de Boer has bought into their concept i.e. This isn't going to be an attempt at recreating total football. If de Boer can concentrate on getting the best out of his players, they'll do OK. If he does what Martino did in his first season and attempt to bend the realities of MLS to his will, they will struggle.
