I hope none of our players get injured playing for the US tonight. This US - El Salvador game is pretty nasty. US also got jobbed on a false offside call earlier.

2-0 for the US. El Salvador being El Salvador - diving and making things look worse than they are. Going into halftime shortly.

Amazing, El Salvador defender pinches & bites Altidore. Amazing control by Jozy not to beat the fricken crap out the player.. That play was hard for the officials to see, but otherwise Drew Fisher has been incredibly bad as the ref.

I was hoping he would so he could come back to Toronto! Should've been a red card.

Drew Fisher is a fucking wimp. Reaches for deserved yellow, realizes the El Salvador player already has a yellow, leaves the yellow in his pocket.

Panama were eliminated today so we should have Cooper back soon, possibly in time for this weekend's game.

There is a problem with Canadian refs and how they call games involving TFC players. Bradley talked about this postgame in his first year.
“What the world needs is more geniuses with humility; there are so few of us left.”

Petrescu is by far the best canadian refs. Gantar and Fischer are so unpredictable. Not sure why Petrescu wasnt sent. On the sidelines, I can't recall Fletcher ever getting a call wrong.

A yellow is a yellow, no matter if you have one or not. I think he thought no one saw, but apparently even the commentators noticed this. :-)

    VAR starts August 5th

First game with it for us is @ DCU that day.

First home game is August 12 vs. Portland

NY times article on it (paywall potential for some)

I suspect noticing that linesmen will be keeping their flags down for any borderline offside decisions they aren't sure about. If you incorrectly raise your flag for offside that stops the play dead, but if you incorrectly keep your flag down the play continues until the review, where in theory the correct call is made anyways.

Great to see that they are implementing this. Does this mean we can see goal line technology some time in the future?

One can only hope. I think that the introduction of VAR may do away with goal line technology as the VAR crew will be able to contact the 4th official and head official in said circumstances. Either way you look at it, it is a long overdue improvement that is greatly needed. Especially with some of the MLS officials.

    Just to clarify the process

There is no "head office command centre" like is done in the NHL.

There is a 5th VAR official at every match, who is a PRO A/R or Ref trained to do VAR work. The Times article has indicated the skill set needed for a VAR is different from a ref and that they fully expect dedicated VAR's to develop over the next few years.

So the VAR decides that the play is worth another look. He tells the head ref that the play should be reviewed. Does the head ref have an option of not reviewing? He has the option of reviewing himself or just taking the VAR Ref's recommendation. I guess if he doesn't take that recommendation it is the same thing as refusing the review.

I guess we'll see how this works out.

We saw VAR at the recent Confed Cup and also men's u20 WC. As FIFA stated, it generally worked but there are changes are needed before it is used for next year's WC.

Some reviews took only 30 seconds while others took 3 minutes. The replays used by VAR were often not shown on TV immediately and sometimes were only shown in the 2nd half. Instead asking for a card, too many players were bugging the ref to look at VAR. The ref still can still make the wrong decision as was seen in the final when a Chilean player should have been red carded or not punished at all but instead was given a yellow for a elbow. VAR called a bit too many offsides on goals that were nitpicky.

    Var needs to be allotted

1 request to each team if wrong

If you want to know how it works, spend an hour and a bit and watch the intro video.

As he says, there are certain situations that are all going to be reviewed. So no need to have challenges.

And anybody making the "box" signal asking for a review is supposed to be shown a yellow.

SO...the US Pro/Rel twitter crowd is all up in arms due to a report leaked to the media that MLS was offered a $4 billion TV rights contract but turned it down because it demanded Pro/Rel.

The offer, if it really exists, comes during a contract time when MLS can't consider another offer.

Oh, and the offer came from the guy who owns the Miami NASL team.

Oh, and really, who knows if there is real money there but......

    hey

    PRO/REL!!!!!!!

Anways, Rollins has a pretty good takedown of the underpinning idea all starting with this tweet.

^ There is no way this is a real offer for all the reasons you said above. I didn't realize this guy owns the Miami NASL team. Interesting.

But it is significant in that it may the first time since the start of the league that P/R has been part of an actual business model challenge put to the MLS leadership (however remote), and not just more noise from the P/R nutbags.

I do agree that Silva is just lobbing some long balls here to see who takes interest, but still important IMO.

    This is not new

A business case was made last year by the guy who at the time was running the Indy NASL team, Peter Witt. His was thought through a bit more but Rollins has a pretty good response to that in his tweet storm.

And this isn't a business model challenge as much as a publicity stunt in the face of a possible MLS Miami team.

    But...hey $4 BILLION!!!!!!

Ok, I kinda forgot about Wilt's manifesto but IIRC that was directed more at creating an alternative pyramid than changing MLS. Point is taken though.

It should also be noted that the same Miami guy also paid a consultant last year to put out a report about how Pro/Rel would be beneficial to soccer in America. He sees NASL as the backdoor into MLS if they can institute pro/rel. I wonder how many NASL owners are also hoping the same thing.
