Honestly, Brunell could be possible competition for Zavaleta's spot... Dude has some good feet, good height, can spray the ball... i mean with those biased highlights, he kind of looks like a slight improvement

Mavinga is a lefty, correct? That would seem to make sense sense, Mavinga for left and Brunnel for right

All of this discussion is great, and means that we don't simply just have basic options at CB, but we have quality AND depth. Competition for spots.

    Still feels bizarre for TFC...lol

Even just the consistency makes a huge difference. Guys like Hagglund and Zavaleta have been given the opportunity to grow and learn from their mistakes and such. Feels like before Vanney, it was one mistake and you were gone from the team with all the turnover. That's not how you grow players and develop chemistry. Those two guys still have lots to improve, but I feel if we were still in the pre Bez+Vanney era, those two guys wouldn't be on our roster right now and a few others

It looks like he was playing in a three-man backline in that vid, too, so he would already be more adapted to our system.

We've signed former 'Quakes and City B defender Jason Hernandez.

Depth signing for sure. still I was not expecting that at all.

Totally, some veteran cover. A veteran presence on the back line to step in from time to time as needed.

So that's 7 CB's we've got now? makes sense I guess if they plan on having Aubrey and maybe Brunell getting a lot of minutes at TFC II.

CB/RB. Surely they think he can play RWB? Can't be any worse out there than Hagglund.

That moves tells me Bez is thinking Mavinga and Zavaleta as the main CB pairing for the next 7 years.

Hernandez played RB for the second half of NYCFC's season. He wasn't all that effective.

I don't get this signing. His resume is not that great. His option was declined by a team with terrible defense that we ripped apart in the playoffs. He is 33. Is he even decent enough to be on the bench? Was there absolutely no better option out there even among our TFC II young guns? I guess I will reserve judgement until I see him play for us but doesn't really impress me looking at the blurb on the TFC site.

He's your RB backup and a CB if needed. Like said above, he played RB for NYCFC the 2nd half of the year. As depth, it's a good signing. Better then Endoh.

Whether its a good or bad signing depends on how much he was signed for.

Whether its a good or bad signing depends on whether he was on the field during our dismantling of NYCFC during the playoffs last year.

he was on 200k last year. I'm assuming his deal with us is significantly lower.

Except this team isn't deploying a RB. Does this 33-year-old have the skill set and engine to adequately play RWB? I have no recollection, but it doesn't appear that way. Seems underwhelming, but I suppose it's best to reserve judgment.

Prepping for a Hagglund trade perhaps? If Mavinga locks down a spot and these depth guys prove they are capable, something will give.

My best guess here is the front office wants to limit the amount of shifting around in the roster as much as possible, they want guys to familiarize themselves with a position in the system and become comfortable there. Hagglund and Mavinga are competing for the LCB role, Zavaleta and Brunell are at RCB, Morrow and Morgan at LWB. This would be why they went with Endoh at RWB when Beitashour couldn't play instead of putting Delgado there, because they (correctly) see Delgado as a CM and don't want to mess with his development there, and the hope was that Endoh could carve out a permanent backup RWB spot for himself (though I think it's clear that's not going to happen and management may be forced to play Delgado there in the future if they don't sign someone else).

So I see Hernandez as Moor's backup. If Moor can't play, I suspect Vanney would rather swap Hernandez in at CB and leave his starting LCB and RCB alone, instead of moving either of those guys into the middle where they would be less comfortable in theory.

The money is illerevent in this situation it's what he brings to the pitch. That's how it should be judged.

Got to love this pic of Jason taking on the Reds during the first season back in 2007.

Vanney interview indicates they do not see him as a RWB in our system or as a RB. He's a backup CD. Cheap one too. As others have said, Josh Williams role.

And with Josh Williams, keep in mind that Columbus took him in the Re-entry Draft, so we didn't really have a choice about keeping him, unless we wanted to trade back for him like we did with Irwin, which I don't think would have made much sense.

We've now got two complete backlines

    Morrow -- Hagglund -- Moor -- Zavaleta -- Beitashour

    Morgan -- Brunell -- Hernandez -- Aubrey -- Mavinga
