Those are some pretty nice renderings!

I hope DC gets that stadium, their supporters deserve a first class place.

Not a fan of Tampa bay at all - doesn't really make much sense to me.

    - Not expandable.
    - Open areas don't make sense from a soccer perspective. Tons of balls will be knocked out of play and into the water

That "North End" in Detroit is small - too small IMO.

I like St Louis - but they will have a hell of a time getting it built. Seems like there is a bit of opposition to it being built with Tax payer money.

But no other stadium can claim that you could literally watch the hurricane swirl it's way right into the stadium.

As for the LAFC pic taken from the highway - are those euro plates?

Especially those red seats (which is a secondary colour for them).

Beautiful renderings. They'll look far less impressive I presume. Crazy how far the league has come though in the last decade.

really? i'm a huge fan of MLS stadiums showcasing the personality of their team, and i think having the bay open is pretty cool looking.

two steps forward, one step back. back when we expanded (and for the next few teams after us), one of the qualifications for being in the league required you to have already broken ground on a stadium, if not have the stadium done already. garber had trumpeted this as the way the league was going to grow, and thought it'd be detrimental to the leagues image if people were playing in stadiums that they weren't the primary tenants of. now.. i can find the quotes, but that requires me to google and research, which i'm not down with, but i can almost guarentee that he said something similar to "no stadium, no expansion".

i specifically remember that we needed have a stadium after what happened with san jose, and that vancouver / philly did as well.

Tampa's can easily look better by keeping the same roof design, as well as expanding the sides of the original stand as much as possible to get closer to the new stand.

Yes, and the first car on the left appears to have the steering wheel on the right with no driver....only a passenger in the left seat.

I actually like the Tampa design because the open corners are so different from any other MLS stadium design out there. It will have it's own personality. I also like the banners they used in the Atlanta design to hide the unused upper decks.

I can appreciate the idea of having the water view, I think it's a fun idea for a community stadium like a Lamport - however, it's not practical from a professional stadium point of view.

    - From a football logistics perspective with the ball flying out of the stadium onto the roadway/water - how many official game balls will they need to have on hand for that
    - From an environment perceptive - there is a big gaping hole in the crowd atmosphere. Like are we there for the football or are we there for the waterfront view?

Not sure if it's common knowledge, but the Tampa Bay Rowdies stadium is a converted baseball stadium (Al Lang Stadium). My buddy has a condo right across the street. I was in their pro shop last month (lots of Joe Cole jerseys!) when we were down for our annual Bucs weekend, and had a good chat with a woman from the club. There is a ton of signage in the neighbourhood bars as well. The area overall is quite impressive. I am looking forward to going down to see TFC 2 play as I am hoping they will be in the same USL conference next season.

The original NASL Rowdies were one of the most iconic and charismatic outfits to play in North America. Would love to have that identity return via MLS.

As for the limited thinking about the stadium possibilities, one only has to refer to one of the great passion pits of Europe, the Vicente Calderon, home of Atleti, to see what is possible:

^ I'd be worried about a suicide car-bomb detonated on the road underneath that stand during a game.

Since Vancouver, Seattle, Portland and Atlanta are never getting grass fields lets hope the artificial stuff gets better and better and are replaced regularly.

Vancouver still has a "vision" of their own Waterfront Stadium, natural grass, seating around 20k. In fact it's still mentioned on the Whitecaps' own web site. They were pushed to go into BC Place at least for a while, so that the expensive rebuild for the Olympics would seem more worth it overall. No idea if the Waterfront Stadium will ever happen, as a couple of hurdles have to be overcome, but that was the plan.

The Seattle stadium theoretically has a condition on it that the surface would be changed to grass if MLS ever demanded that. But yeah with a few other long-term artificial turf stadiums likely in the league, it will be hard to ever show that grass is necessary.

I guess Atlanta will be using "GreenFields Turf" which I haven't heard of before, is that any better? Here's some fabulous-sounding marketing about the surface, but we shall see. Does anyone remember the supposed wonders of Duraspine? http://www.atlutd.com/post/2016/02/1...ing-mb-stadium

I was going to say, the temperature on artificial turf in the Atlanta summer will be absolutely unbearable, unless someone comes up with a way to keep the artificial surfaces much cooler than is currently the case. But I guess their new stadium is supposed to have a retractable roof. I wonder if they will close the roof & use a/c if it's very hot for MLS games in the summer?

Portland Timbers stadium is a shame, you can grow great grass of every type in Portland. Until the Portland State football team finds a new home (likely never) that will stay artificial turf.

True. It's just the whole design is very functional and not much else.

I wonder if they could ever try installing some kind of tray system retroactively, or if something like that must be built into the original design of the stadium (I'm guessing the latter, but it would be interesting if someone could figure out how to do it).

I think the best bet is for technology to keep getting better and in a decade hope that fake grass becomes the superior surface.

In a way tampas stadium would be very unique, there are a few in Europe with some odd designs tho. They wouldn't be the first.
