Yeah, Ives basically confirmed that the Marsch move came very close to happening:

That howl of agony you just heard coming from south of the border is from RBNY fans. Apparently Dax McCarty has been traded to Chicago for $400K in allocation.

That's a lot of GarberBux, I wonder what RBNY has in mind.

That's a lot of GAM going to NYRB.

Paul Tenorio (who broke the news and is THE beat guy for the Fire) made a good point on all this

Edit: The GAM is split over 2 seasons - $200K each.

Getting hard to handicap the league, big changes for a lot of teams, lots of new talent coming in. Have to say that the Revs and DCU might be falling behind.

Rumor of veteran US international Jonathan Spector, soon out of contract at Birmingham City, coming to MLS. Fire mentioned as a likely landing spot, but mainly because he's a native Chicago boy. I'd think this would have to go through the allocation process, though. I could see a lot of teams being interested.

edit: he's not on the allocation list, probably not part of the US MNT pool anymore.

I think those were special deals/league interventions. Spector not on allocation list because he's not a returning USMNT. He's never played in MLS prior.

The published allocation list came in after the dempsey/bradley/jozy shenanigans so they wouldn't happen again.

The rest of the league cried foul when it appeared that Garber was signing marquee american players for the league and funneling them on to teams that the league deemed to be of greater value (bigger fanbases in need of big names et al.). In the Dempsey case for instance, the league told the teams that they were going to get him and they should submit contracts if they want a shot at him. IIRC there were 3-4 teams who submitted, us included, and the league decided they liked the idea of Dempsey signing in Seattle most.

League buckled and created a list of USMNT players who would have to go through the usual allocation process if they were coming to the league (Beasley was an example of this). Everyone not on the list will not by signed or targeted by the league in the same manner (i.e. Lletget).

oh, that makes perfectly stupid sense, so stupid its something MLS would do

no DP should go though allocation, there is no cap on DP salary. may the highest bidder win

I think it was definitely of a time. The league had a huge opportunity handed to them to shape a few major franchises in major markets for 5-10 years. I can understand why they did it. For a league still fighting for relevance in the NA sports landscape, you want to do everything to get people to come out to see their teams in major markets, as well as rewarding owners who want to spend. I'm glad its not still policy but it worked for a short period of time.

With a team with as many twists and almost turns as we've had over just 10 years, I still think our most interesting alternate history is one where we do in fact end up signing Dempsey in the summer of 2013. Pre-defoe major DP signing for Nelsen. I still wonder from time-to-time what would be different.

    Alternative speculative history? Hm.........

We make the playoffs in 2013.
Bradley goes to Seattle in 2014.
Nelsen implodes in 2014 trying to figure out where to put the Deuce but more importantly because he refused to use even basic tech to keep his players fit. replaced by Vanney.
Seba & Loderio come here in 2015, announced on the same day.
2016 a bit of a washout due to Dempsey getting cancer.
We beat Seattle (where Altidore has ended up) in MLS Cup 2017.

    *****

The repercussions of even one move in the transfer market are huge.

MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto
