Club football is officially on the map in this country.

I never thought we would crack a million viewers in our first ever playoff run. Playing Montreal helped considerably, but it's still very impressive nonetheless.

I have a buddy who works for Sportsnet and he gave me these tv numbers.

    TFC - 815,000
    Maple Leafs - 604,000
    Raptors - 152,000

I cannot confirm if they are correct, but if so, that is rather impressive.

Ya my source is telling me the same. Combined with RDS just under 1.3 million and reached over 4.1 million

    Another record breaker

TORONTO (December 1, 2016) – Last night’s rain-soaked, extra-time classic between Toronto FC and Montreal Impact in the MLS Eastern Conference Championship has attracted another record-breaking audience. Overnight data from Numeris confirms that an average audience of 1.4 million viewers watched TFC’s 5-2 victory over the Impact on TSN (862,000*) and RDS (519,000*) – breaking the record for Canada’s most-watched MLS game in history.
The game’s average audience marked a 35% increase over the previous record, set by the two teams just last week in their thrilling Leg #1 matchup.

Overall, 4.4 million unique viewers watched some part of the Leg #2 match on TSN and RDS, with audience levels peaking at 9:23 p.m. ET as Canadian striker Tosaint Ricketts scored an extra time goal for TFC to seal the victory.

It's really impressive. I wonder what the final is going to get.

The real question is how much we draw next year. The Raptors for example posted big numbers for their playoff run, but their regular season games so far are back to their usual low-ish numbers.

Probably be the same as Raptors. Outside of Cdn teams, MLS has minimal traction. I doubt 25% of the viewers could name a Sounders player.

Plus, the 2 matches against the Impact was at its "very best, an intoxicating cocktail of skill, spectacle, bad blood and enough incredulous moments to leave even neutrals feeling like they might hyperventilate."

Regular season matches aren't going to match this and when on the road, there is no true football atmosphere to speak off except for a few cities.

Hard to say. You will lose the Montreal portion of that record since their team is out.

But lots of casual fans tuned in and saw that game. I had numerous texts from non soccer coworkers asking me how the game was live. They may want to see how the book ends.

    Maybe 800-900k?

Pretty impressive either way. Well deserved too.

Next season? I don't think you see a large bump, unless it's the Montreal rematch.

If memory serves they still got a bump after the playoff run last year. Numbers are low, as you mentioned but still up y/y.

4.4 million tuned in for at least parts parts of the match throughout the country. That is nothing short of spectacular.

TFC aren't "Canada's Team" as say the Jays or Raptors. I would think they are as equally hated in BC & QC as loved in ONT. We may have peaked ratings wise last night.

Must suck to be a Whitecaps fan right now. Who will you be cheering for on Dec 10th?

Who would fans of the Shitecraps root for on the 10th? Toronto or Seattle?

Honestly I think they'll support Toronto marginally over Seattle. Apart from the Voyageuers, they have no reason to hate us yet.

Just saw a story on CTV national about the popularity of soccer. Directly compared Vancouver, Montreal and TFC's attendance to CFL teams. Really good story for soccer.

I agree. They should after the Miracle in Montreal in 2009, knocking them out in penalties in 2014, and the Will Johnson last minute broken leg goal in 2016.
We've had great success at their expense.

I never understood this symmetry, and said so in that 200 page Argo thread.

TFC is taking share broadly, probably mostly from the NHL/Leafs.

The Argos died 30 years ago, and the CFL is pretty tenuous in Vancouver and Montreal also. The fact the the CFL is going strong in Hamilton and Winnipeg, and that those numbers add up to something for TSN ... well whoop de do.

    A question concerning television.

Saturday's match will be shown live on TSN and on the Fox network in the United States - the first time a U.S. over the air network will be showing an MLS match in prime time.

Does TSN plan to produce their own broadcast of the match, with Luke and Stephen calling it? Or will they use the Fox feed to simulcast it?

Did another check of our google search results since Day 1, this month has hit the stratosphere as our highest number of searches in our history (more than even the big numbers we drew during our first 3 seasons):

Even worse was the rain cancellation at 59minutes...cancelling a game they were winning and forcing a replay the next day which they lost. That might have been one of the most brutally low points a team could have.
