True, but all the venues they've used so far could handle at least 40,000 seats without temporary structures. With many there was no need at all. I was basically looking at options beyond the south end for BMO. Sure it wouldn't be a lot but if you angle down from the permanent seating you could get approx 600 more seats on each the east and west side. No, some wouldn't have the best viewing angles but even in proper hockey venues you can't fully see the other end from certain seats right behind the boards.

Of course, totally forget that for any other sport. It would be a waste of time.

Going back through the entire thread would take too much time, but wasn't there talk of retractable seating initially? What happened to that?

There is on the south stand (first 6 or 7 rows are retractable to make space for football). The north "patio" could easily fit a good 5,000 fans but the main problem apparently is that storage at BMO for these retractable stands are tight.

Never thought of storage. Initially I was thinking about that hydraulic system they have at the ACC but the added seating still has to go somewhere when it's not in use. Easy for them to do since that part of the building is a few stories below ground level.

They only way that they could put the massive retractable stands that 20-30 rows is to make retract and look like a wall. For example https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ome_baggie.JPG

Even the ones in the south will be removed and stored offsite, that's how little room they have to work with.

As with the pic posted above 2 stands with these would be ideal. It would close out the stadium very nicely, and keep fans close to the field.

Next, if the Argos are here to stay, it would be nice figuring out a way to have a separate surface for them. Makes me wonder what exactly Tottenham is planning. They plan to have 2 move able fields, 1 for NFL games. But, that still means no blue at the stadium!!!!

Cost. Retractable seating and separate surfaces cost more than the Argos are worth.

I think this winter classic announcement is almost a best case scenario for us. We get both big events over with in one year
While I still feel they'll play it indoors at the dome, at bmo the temp seats can just stay up post grey cup.
I wouldn't be surprised if for the hockey they add a temp north stand as well. Surely they could extend outwards. TFC would close off that space for the bud beer garden. With no north stand in place, all that's in the way is a fence perhaps.

My problem with the retractible stands are that they can not hold all that weight. It's mostly a supports section and they always be jumping and standing. I remember at a TFC II game last year against Roma's academy they used that temporary stand (benches no seats) made of metal. Towards the end of the game Inebriatti who were the supports there broke the bench completely and were moved to another part of the stadium. These retractible stands have to be able to withstand 200 fans (first 7 rows) jumping.

I don't think that the southend 2nd deck can go as pictured as the canopy doesn't go that far back.

That's the original TFC pic made blue by the Argos and then badly made into Leaf land.

Nice trees out the south east corner.

I've always thought the outdoor classics are ridiculous.
The concept is cool, but the execution is garbage.
Fans are so far from the action it seems like a waste of money.
I'm not suggesting we start building outdoor hockey stadiums though.

Interesting how many times an image can be mangled.

I think BMO Field will be the best venue yet to host an outdoor game. It will be far more intimate than past games and offer decent sight lines. It should be a fantastic event.

What I heard is that there's no intention for the temp seats in the south end to be covered. They will extend behind the canopy.

i agree with this, the only one that looked somewhat good was 2014 in Michigan Stadium since their stands are so close

    What???

The game will sell out in minutes. Ticket prices will be nuts but fans won't
think a second about it. An event like this pays the bills.

    I'm not disputing that.

I understand what you are saying. As an Englishman I don't "get" the winter classic at all. A hockey game outside - who cares!

But I also realise that a lot of Canadians will think that this one game is the best thing since sliced bread and it will definitely sell out. "A hockey game outside - in the middle of winter...everybody all wrapped up warm....just like my childhood....fantastic....I wanna go!".
