I think Pequis and Cheyrou already fall into that range right? We just already paid them down.

But this is new money coming in so we can't have paid them down already, I think we may have paid them down using allocation we already had if at all

500k to be spent as teams please on paying down DPs to a cap hit being at most 750k.

So with L.A., they need to buy down Gonzalez to 750k to free up a DP slot. He makes $1 million in base salary (he makes 1.25 million in guaranteed compensation - I'll assume the base salary is the cap hit for now). So L.A. has to come up with $250k in allocation every year they want to have a CP + 3 DPs. They get two years covered for them by the league. If they want a third, they basically have to blow all their allocation on one guy (can't save it up over the years since it has an expiry date). Not ideal, and this is a rule that was made to make this exact scenario happen.

Then again, Keane is turning 35 in 6 days and Gerrard is 35 already. If one of them leaves after 2 years, it works out beautifully for them. If they both stay for at least 3 years, not so much.

Doesn't seem fantastic for L.A. And it's worse for us. If I'm reading this right, we literally can't touch the money at all.

It's only for "current" DPs. We have 3 DPs and all of them are massively beyond the realm of paying down to 750k. We can't make Cheyrou or Perquis a CP because they have to be a DP first, and we already have 3. So we can't get any of this 500k in allocation?

Ironically enough, the only use for this I can see, assuming these rules are correct, is that we can bring back Gilberto as a CP for one season, maybe two (he's on 1.145 million base).

But whatever. I probably shouldn't even try to understand this. Probably changed the rule again by the time I finished typing this sentence.

MLS HQ lackey: "Mr. Garber, we can get Dos Santos and Chicarito in the league but on LA and Orlando. They already have 3 DPs each."

The Don: "We need to get these players in MLS. It will raise expansion costs and give us more ad revenue. Let's do this up."

MLS HQ lackey: "So should I send a memo to the team reps letting them know a fourth DP is coming?"

The Don: "Naw. That's too easy. Let's make them work for it. Check this out."

*shows convoluted page of inane gibberish*

MLS HQ lackey: "I don't get it."

The Don: "Perfect. Scan it and send it to all the team's reps."

So did the league change this rule specifically so that LA could sign this player or were they going to do this anyways because of the new CBA?

It's been talked about since the CBA negotiations

Yup, there's been talk of this since December. People will continue to think this was created just for LA though.

Anyway, this rule will mainly help the many teams who have DPs at <$750k. Too bad it wasn't around when we wanted to keep Laba.

So many ways they could have done something like this to give more teams flexibility:

    1. 1 transfer fee per year doesn't count vs the cap (helps pull young talent out of south america)
    2. Domestic DP slot (keeps and brings top domestic talent to MLS)
    3. Additional DP slot for the min DP (500k-1mil with lower cap hit than normal DP, similar to young DP rule)
    4. Simple 4th DP slot

but they had to go make up a convoluted rule that will benefit very few teams.

At least we have a little extra allocation money coming in.

Its a good rule for mid market teams like SKC that can get 3 DP's at around 600K and can almost stretch themselves to a 4th. This will allow them to keep Dwyer, for example.

I like the idea cause it begins to seperate the real tight wads from the mid level owners who know their limitations but also know where they can spend a bit. Its an incentive to spend, which is a good thing.

SKC, Portland, SJE, Chicago, possibly Philly can all use this rule to get themselves a step farther then the Houston's and the Dallas and the Columbus' of MLS. And anything that can get the cheapskates out of thie league is a good thing.

They had to give every team something, so it ends up as Garber bucks.

So if we can't find a CP, (due to not just wasting a transfer fee/big contract if the right person isn't out there) can we technically just use Gilberto , and then at the end of our season loan him out again ?

Personally i'd be down to see Gilberto return (if it is indeed do-able with this new rule). Especially if the mechanism would go unused otherwise.

He already has a relationship with the core guys who were here last year, and he adds pace coming from a wide position that we currently lack. Imagine Gio cutting in from the left and Gilb cutting in from the right, with Altidore in the center.

    Giovinco- Altidore - Gilberto
    Bradley
    Cheyrou- Osorio
    Morgan-Zava-Perquis-Morrow
    Konopka

I like that - although i'd also really like one stud CB and possibly another back - left or right

Altidore drifts to the right a lot as it is. He's not a classic hold up centre forward.

And anything that takes away from the diamond is weakening our midfield.

Attack isn't our issue. Gilberto isn't our need.

Agreed, we need to forget about Gilberto. It was a worthwhile experiment, but he's simply not what the team needs right now.

We need defenders. A full back, a centre back and possibly a depth midfielder to cover for international call ups.

Gilberto won't be coming back under the new rule.

It said that you can use 100k a year or 500k in one shot to buy down a cap hit of 750k or less. We'd need 500k in allocation lying around to get him eligible before being able to touch the core spot allocation.

We are tight to the cap, it aint happening.

Anyways, he hasn't scored a goal in league play for Vasco this season.

We'll use or core money when Caldwell is off the books.

It's going to be hilarious seeing the reaction of the anti-MLS trolls from Mexico on the MLSsoccer comments after those 2 deals for Mexican national teammates goes through...

That was in a pre-season mini tournament of teams based in Rio. So far in Brazil's Serie A, he's scored 0 goals in 776 minutes.

Kurtis Larson ‏@KurtLarSUN 2m2 minutes ago I'm told Toronto FC is working to add another significant piece. Something is in the works, although won't be a Core DP.

If Larson has news, somebody else will have another angle with a bit more info as well.
