Yep. Toronto is neither a sports city or an arts city. It's a working city with a significant number of people who are completely intolerant toward the very thought of new recreational or entertainment developments.

This is a city that torpedoed a plan for a casino and convention centre at Exhibition Grounds - that project is now going to Pickering. This is a city that turned down a proposal to build North America's largest waterpark - that project is now going to Milton. In fact, Ripley's Aquarium has been the only new entertainment facility (non-sport) built in the City since the opening of Canada's Wonderland in 1981.

Every square inch of non-government land has gone to condos. We can live here, but yes, we can't have fun.

This is why in the long term I could see Toronto's local economy struggling when 905 region cities start building more "fun" venue/events on their land which will 905ers a reason to stay home instead of going to Toronto.

Personally speaking, if wasn't for TFC, I would rarely come to Toronto. It simply is too expensive and time consuming going to Toronto.

And now that I think of it, the Ripley's Aquarium also faced opposition when it was first proposed. I'm assuming mostly from animal rights activists like these:

I'm the same. I only come into town for sporting events. Mostly TFC, but maybe once or twice a year I'll watch the Raptors or Jays play. Part of it does have to do with the amount of travel time from Oshawa and back, but like you said, there are so many other alternatives closer to home. I like to bet on horses, so I spend my free Sundays at Ajax Downs. If I want to catch a hockey game, I'll go see the Generals at the GM Centre. On my mid-week days off, I can catch a movie for cheap or go swimming and relax in the hot tub at the local pool. And during the summer I have the choice of going north to Vaughan and visit Canada's Wonderland or head East to Cobourg Beach or Sandbanks Provincial Park. Heck, there's a nice and inexpensive waterpark just East of Bowmanville I'll usually hit up a few times a year.

That noise some of you might have heard from south of BMO yesterday was a music festival. Festivals like that will be happening all summer long.

This weekend its Door Open Toronto.

    That's just 2 examples.

Lots going on in Toronto fun wise.

I could almost make a case for Toronto being a literary city, the IFOA is one of the best literary festivals in the world and Word on the Street is a big event. And Toronto has produced some great writers. But people don't get very excited about books these days.

Where you went wrong is using Doors Open Toronto as an example of fun things to do. Oh look! We can check out the internal architecture of the Parisian Laundry Building! Who needs roller coasters and waterslides when you can take a self-guided tour of the Ontario Heritage Centre?!

Sorry Og, but I don't think many kids younger than 18 would get much of a kick outta Doors Open.

Kids love Doors Open. Get to see the inside of interesting buildings. TTC greenwood yard was packed yesterday with kids and adults.

Yeah my two friends in their mid-20's attended Doors Open and said it was great. One of them is from the 905, believe it or not!

I am not liking the whole "Toronto isn't fun" jabs going on right now. I think there is a tendency of out of towners making generalizations about Toronto based on preconceived assumptions (as I write this, I feel like a hypocrite because I am making my own assumptions! Ah start the self loathing!). From my experience, it's an overall lack of awareness of what is going on.

As someone who grew up in Toronto, I didn't need to constantly go to flashy theme parks every day. I might have gone to Canada's Wonderland maybe once a year growing up? We would play for hours in the streets (hockey, basketball, baseball, etc). People would be surprised how little kids need to stay entertained.

I probably would have liked Doors Open considering it would be "something different." Give me a little ice cream at the end of the day, and I'd be set haha.

    But that's just me.

I walked around BMO pre, HT and post game the whole time wondering where they will put the blue. There is so much red.

You can get anything you want in Toronto if you know where to find it. The number of sex clubs in this city disputes the notion of this city not being fun. It's like saying Manhattan isn't fun because it doesn't have a fucking water park or horse racing.

This discussion on "fun" only serves to underscore the transformation of this city over the past few decades. Not to take too many broad strokes but really what you can say about Casinos, water parks, and the like other than it's more so blue collar and this is now a heavily white collar city.

While I get downtown is missing a few things... personally I found my years living there to be packed with fun.

    And to be blunt

Everybody on here is yelling about it and you expect the journo's not to ask the players?!?!

Isn't that what you want? Publicity for the concern?

Geez...people on here want it both ways. To be ticked at MLSE and have themselves listened to and acknowledged. And then when Journo's do their job and give you what you want and ask players and Vanney about the concerns, now its a conspiracy.

What? I don't see any complaints about the journos doing their jobs. I comment on how genuine the player answers are on this hotbed question and you blow your top?

I don't see how any of this is on the players or coach. I don't blame them for what their boss did.

I don't need to be listened to or acknowledged on this issue but from the person responsible.

"Guys I'd like you to do some interviews saying you're not worried about the Argos moving in"
That's what I was responding to. The idea that the players brought this up cause management suggested.

Fair enough. You're right in saying it wouldn't have needed orchestrating an interview but a simple "Guys, they will probably ask you about..."

I recall someone asking about painting green over lines on the field. This was done for the Hull City - Man Utd game yesterday should be easy enough to find video to see what it looked like.

    I hear ya!

You don't need flashy and large attractions to be a great city. It's events like Doors Open and the Jazz Festival that makes a city great.
I go to Wonderland one every 2 years, and I don't spend more than 5 hours. I could spend hours walking the city and checking out the architecture.

I would hope ontario place gets something like of the sorts taht your looking for. A casino/entertainment venue at woodbine race track would have been much appreciated, that area needs any kind of jobs it can get

For Christ's sake, what's up with these Toronto isn't fun jokesters? We're a developed, westernized city-region of 7 million people, anyone who can't have fun here is a socially inept loser lol... I go back and forth between Toronto, New York and Miami and quite frankly, Toronto is as much fun or more fun then either of them. You're only bored if you're boring.

Are we LA or Miami, no!

But those cities aren't financial hubs like NYC CHI-Town or Toronto

I love our city, clean, safe, tons of bars and growing

"You're only bored if you're boring."

^This. If you can't find something fun (and free or for the cost of transit) to do every weekend of the year in Toronto then you're either not trying or you're a hopeless contrarian.
