No way is basketball all about athletic ability.

Toronto FC baby...best team everrrrrrrrrr -Jozy

Growing up in North Toronto, our community house league put on by the LPAA was pretty much coached by any available parent. As crazy as this may sound in this day and age, I remember as a 6 year in the early 80's playing full field 11 vs. 11. It was essentially 20 kids chancing the ball around in whatever direction it went. As far I know with neither the North Toronto Soccer Club and especially the Lawrence Park Athletic Association in my neighborhood at the house league level no type of license/certification is required.

When talking about attendance one can't just look at attendance averages per game, have to also take into condideration how many home games a particular team plays each season. The MLS I think averages pretty close to the NHL and NBA per game, which is great, however, in the MLS you only play 17 or so home games , the NHL and NBA play over what 40 home games, so that needs to be taken into consideration when looking at attendance in different sports, moreover , the CFL only play like 9 home games compared to the MLS 17 so there is a big difference there to when comparing the Argos attendance to TFC attendance or even the Rock attendance when they were filling the ACC where I think the Rock play like 6 or 7 home games.
I remember my days as a youth soccer coach and coaching a boys team of 16 year olds, they were a pretty big team physically , however we had a few games where we came up against teams that overall were a lot smaller physically than us, but it did not mean much on the field, remember getting a lesson in soccer a few times going against these physically smaller teams, the beauty of soccer I guess where size in a lot of cases in this sport does not matter as much.
You're really tooting this "We're both the same" horn. If that was the case the last back and forth between tv ratings and attendance wouldn't have happened. It's the difference in getting sponsorship that ensco is highlighting. It's the extreme contrast to which I'm referencing. Attendance looks great and gets more people wanting to come out but any sports team in NA that needs money needs eyeballs (or tv's on for background noise) to get the $$$.
I don't understand your last line about difference. If both sets get jealous what are they different from?
We're in agreement that we don't need to get into what the Argos are or constantly devolve into measuring in comparison.
We disagree that we need to support them at all. Eliminate the hate, sure. I just don't need to co-miserate with them. I do enough of misery with one Toronto team.

FORMER FULL TIME KOOL-AID DRINKER
Disagree on basketball. If you didn't play from an early age your utility is limited. There is still the occasional spot out there for athletic freaks without a lot of skill but their roles are limited to rebounding under the basket / defensive specialist.
Stef Curry is a bottom quartile athlete in the NBA but was at worst the 3rd best player in the league. That's all about skill. Of course having a baseline level of height and athleticism is required, but that goes for most sports. All that athleticism will help you little if your dribbling, shooting percentage, ability to see the floor, are below par.
Can we honestly lock this thread?
The Argo's are here, they have not affected the game day experience and so far everything has gone smoothly.
If such a day comes where the pitch is crap or you see Argo's insignia on game day by all means open a thread.
This thread has no purpose anymore and is going way off topic. This a forum about TFC and I'm so sick of seeing all of this back and forth discussion of Argo's attendance and relevance going on here. Go to the other sports section and discuss it in the Argo thread.
yes please..this is such a negative and always off topic thread, the argos are not going leaving anytime soon and i dont understand why we want another team to fail.
Why lock the thread? There’s plenty of related info that interests some. The Argos attendance woes add an interesting new wrinkle to the conversation. We have also seen schedule impacts that are important to TFC.
I have a real genius suggestion to those that are annoyed by this thread, or just aren't interested: Don't open the thread.
Not until they declare a winner between greatwhitenorf and Pookie, just kidding. The sparring duet the two fans sing is informative and fun.
^
Argos play today and it's not raining. I think the streak will continue unless someone grabbed the can of permanent paint.
Side guess, attendance around 20k (I know, I know ALL Hamilton fans) and tv ratings in the 500k range (again ALL Hamilton fans)
When greatwhitenorf stops talking with his neighbours about cricket, maybe he can come back and tell us what's not working about this ground share. (Just kidding... no one ever stops talking about cricket)

Over the past few months Argo fans seem to be complaining on Twitter about security and customer service
The Argos wore their away jerseys at home today to break the jinx and it worked. Maybe they're on to something.
As for attendance, I predicted at the onset that a realistic goal for the franchise in the confines of BMO Field would be about 20,000. If they can put a competive team on the field and win their share of games at home, I stand by that prediction.
You have to be absolutely crazy if you think even a quarter of those TV viewership numbers are coming from the GTA. The attedance numbers compared to TV numbers don't make sense. I suspect the GTA viewership numbers for the Argos are about the same as TFC get.
I don't understand this argument.
Let's say you are right. Even if it is only the Timmins/Thunder Bay corridor providing the ratings bounces, isn't the argument here that soccer is more popular?
If so, why does TFC, Vancouver and Montreal have such difficulty in expanding beyond a niche property in the TV game? They are on TSN like the CFL. If all Argos ratings are influenced by fans in other cities then either the team or league (or both) have expanded interest, sustained interest beyond being a local favourite to the magnitude of at least 5x local. (500k vs 100k in your hypothesis).
I also don't get what bashing the CFL has to do with BMO. It's not like the Argos Clause wasn't important in getting the original deal done. It's not like the City, who own BMO, don't want them there. It's not like they didn't pay $10m to be a part here. It's not like they didn't sign a long term lease with MLSE. It's not like MLSE intends to rebuild the north stand to prevent CFL football (ie Grey Cups) from ever being played there. It's not like they don't finally have solid ownership with deep pockets and a long term view.
It's also not like TSN, who need properties to compete with the ratings the Jays get on sportsnet is in any way interested in not supporting the viability of content that draws hundreds of thousands weekly.
Do any of those signs point to this being a one (season) and done financial arrangement?
Argos have less fans in the stands. Well technically more than we typically get for concacaf but I guess all the soccer mad folks are on vacation those days. Argos lose the attendance count. Got it.
Does that change anything?

In Italy, there are different reasons why people don't show up to games. Old, rundown stadiums, violence inside and outside the stadium, high ticket costs relative to salary etc. The Argos have none of these excuses. People are just aren't interested in them, at least in the 416.
Toronto is a big city though and there's room for many franchises, so as long as there aren't football lines on the field and as long as the field is in good shape for TFC, the Argos aren't on my radar.
Unequal treatment for sure. TFC gets on TSN *sometimes.* (where were they this weekend?)
They get a small percentage of the promo that CFL gets, both on a per-game basis and on a per-week basis. I've seen plenty of CFL show promos, relatively few MLS spots.
There is also more saturation for the league - 4 games every week, on multiple TSN channels. MLS, when it is on TSN, is not as often on more than one channel.
TFC needs a consistent, accessible TV presence, with proper promotion of that, in order to get people to watch the games. As it is, who is going to stumble upon the game when it's on SN360?
After that, TFC/MLS need to do more promo that reaches beyond the local market, if they want better widespread viewership. This should be easy for them, with BMO as a partner, to reach out to (for example) soccer associations across the provinces. (And VWFC with Bell could do the same; Bell is already on board for the national teams, so promoting local soccer should be a winner for them).
Exactly this in bolded......Serie A viewership to live attendance is a very poor example in comparison to the Argos' current situation at BMO....
Ironically, the Serie A example would be a good comparison to the Argos' situation as it was at Rogers Centre......
