Yeah, it was a bit awkward now that I've listened to it. In these cases, you don't mic the Italian speakers, you let them talk but the translator's the one who's got the microphone. Imagine how annoying it is for those who understand both languages

EDIT: I should clarify, you do mic them, but you turn them down and have the translator be the one who is heard more clearly.

Absolutely correct. IMO, this was the best translator we've ever had at a presser.

Watch Question Period in the house of commons, this is the way they translate.

Definitely - oftentimes, translators wait until the person finishes, then give a half-assed precis of what was said, often with their own spin on it. (Not real pros, of course.)

Anybody else hope they release a t-shirt with this design? Perhaps Formica Atomica on the back? Or, of course, Giovinco

Just watched it, thanks for the link. There is no faking that. He is excited and eager to please his fans. Hopefully he gets off to a good start and has the fans firmly behind him with no doubts ever throughout his time here.

Some people put on a face for the media, including Defoe who was very used to intrusive English media, and you know to disregard what they say, as they say what they need to say to be polite, but they know the game.

Some guys don't have this skill and really are just themselves, and this looked like the case to me. He's genuinely excited and was really candid about why he left Italy. I'm even more excited to have him on the team after watching that.

ok - I have to ask - is the literal translation of Formica Atomica 'Atomic Ant' ? Or should it be Atom Ant ? Atomo Formica ?

If the Wiki is to be believed, then it has to be the latter.

    Atomic Ant seems so clumsy.

    Any experts out there ?

^ I agree, Atom Ant reminds me too much of Adam and the Ants.

But what I REALLY want to know, if formica means ant in Italian, WTF does that have to do with kitchen countertops?

    Stand and Deliver!

Full disclosure: was wild about Adam Ant back in the golden-oldey days.

He actually played in Detroit a few months ago, he's had a rough life since the big time. Didn't go. Some things are better left in the past.

Sure, fine (and I'm also a big Ant fan), but where did this Atomica Formica come from ? Did we make it up ? Is it a nickname the Italian press gave him ?

They usually use some licence when translating cartoon characters to other languages and it's rarely literal. For the Flintstones, Fred is Pedro Picapiedra and Barney is Pablo Marmol - not much to do with the original names. So it's Formica Atomica over there because that must make better sense in Italian. It's been used for quite a while. So here it would be Atom Ant because that's the pre-translated original.

^ a thoughtful answer, which I accept because it supports my point. However, I think it's best left in it's Italian form, so Formica Atomica it is !

Formica Atomica translated to english is Atomic Ant.

Is it really that difficult to understand ?

Yes, it would be awkward to use the English form. Translating names is bad enough but translating 'em back is just plain silly

    Exactly.

It directly translates from Italian as Atomic Ant. Here's a handy Google Translate link (https://translate.google.com/#auto/en/formica%20atomica) which, at least in this case, actually got it right. So it's not really a surprise that the nickname might be interpreted that way, especially by those who haven't heard of the cartoon character.

Atom Ant works in English because it sounds like "Adam", but in Italian, saying "La Formica Atomo" or even worse "Atomo Formica" doesn't cut it. La Formica Atomica sounds better. Sometimes, a play on words or a joke just doesn't translate, so you need to interpret it differently or just plain out change it.

I do think it's best to use the Italian one or to go to Atom Ant, since it is a character. Or we can just call him our top goalscorer/assist man (I hope).

Nice shirt...my only suggestion would be to put Giovinco at the back because we already see the ant in the front.

Nah. Dude has a mansion in England and has never been short of money. He's bi-polar, and has been since the seventies. Occasionally drinks too much or goes off the meds because of their doping effect.

Did you know the reason he became "Adam Ant" (it was originally 'Adam and the Ants') was because Malcolm McLaren stole the ants, gave them a female singer and created Bow Wow Wow? Ironically, Goody Two Shoes (his biggest hit on this side) was after they left.

Went to see them in Doncaster, England around 1980, was blown away by the way they had 2 sets of drums and 2 drummers. They were a very good punk band at one point then they went and got famous and all commercialized. After Dog Eat Dog they went downhill pretty fast. And Goody Two Shoes epitomized everything bad about them.
