Is this a TFC @ the draft thread or can we use this as a general the draft is useless thread?

We pick 9th so we have a small chance of picking up someone moderately useful.

All things being equal there are three Canucks at the MLS Combine this week - one kid - Ryan James - is from Mississauga who apparently is a decent defensive mid who did not miss a game in four seasons with Bowling Green University dating back to him starting with them back in 2012. Apparently the kid is a good all round citizen. He might be worth a look-see.

That poem is full of appropriate words about the draft.

From everything I've read, this draft class is looking very weak.

If that's the case, then is the only reason for the draft just to look like the other NA Major Leagues? i don't think any other NA sport teams run their own academies the way Soccer teams do to develop talent.

Hmm.....when MLS' own web page is saying the event shouldn't be increasing expectations, maybe it time to get rid of the word "Super" in front of Draft. http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/01/05/what-you-should-expect-your-teams-superdraft-selections

We have only once drafted anyone who really started regularly since we drafted Edu. Stefan Frei.

EDIT: I guess Cronin and maybe Farrell and Silva should/could count, so that's 4-5 guys total in 9 years. Two number ones, a number two, a number 4 and a number 13.

Unless we have one of the top two picks in the draft, no real point in caring.

Maybe. Kind of a different case though, I don't remember all of it, but it was willingness to pay $500K transfer fee that determined where he went, more than draft dynamics. He was a late round guy who would have gone very high but for the fee.

True in a sense, but I mean weak in terms of top-end talent. The "standout" guy of this draft, Yaro, doesn't even have a particular position nailed down.

Seems likely at this point that this draft will produce a very low amount of starters, maybe the lowest ever.

I generally agree with this. For the teams who apparently need some signings out of this draft (Chicago mainly but others too it seems), it will be interesting to see what they do.

Apparently this draft analysis "board" might actually be worth something.

Not that being high upon a list actually means something talent wise.

That's not really uncommon among NCAA trained players though.

    http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/0...mock-draft-1-0

First mlssoccer.com mock draft has TFC take Richie Laryea at 9
“Years have gone by and I’ve finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar for good football.

I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’

And when good football happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don’t give a damn which team or country performs it.”

that's lazy on their part^^. We have like 800 jack-of-all-trades CM's. we aren't getting another one with our top pick.

Yaro's a CB through and through. can play a bit at FB and DM, but he'll be a starting CB on the fire next year.

NCAA produces grinders for the most part. I'd see if there is a DM in there somewhere worth his weight.

It's not uncommon to find guys at FB, CB, or DM who can contribute something (maybe not a lot but still!). Attacking talent on the other hand ... Little harder to come by.

when we talk about how analyst's are saying the draft is weak, let's take into account that MLS teams are significantly better at scouting then they are. there's no central scouting organization or year round coverage of NCAA soccer like there is in other NA league's where most players are known commodities going into the draft. every year they say the draft is weak, and yet last year 16 out of 20 first round picks became at the very least meaningful squad players in their first years.

Why? We're the first Canadian team to pick in the draft and he might not be worth an international spot to all the American clubs who wanna go out and buy players from SA and CA. This is a situation where this rule actually works for us.

Highly rated/coveted amongst several teams. Canadian doesnt mean anything especially in a draft that lacks a lot of quality.

Ives has him as going 3rd overall.

"No player in the country boosted their stock more in 2015 than Laryea, who emerged as the best playmaker in the country to help Akron make an impressive run to the College Cup semifinals. The Canadian midfielder is a deft passer, serious quickness and the physical attributes to contribute early on in his pro career despite having just finished his sophomore season. Has yet to sign a Generation adidas deal."
