    Interesting tweets from Sunderland fans:

If this Defoe story is bollocks, then the sun journalist has really put his neck out! Says it's signed and sealed. #safc

Not sure about this Defoe crack... 32 and we not exactly going to provide him chance after chance are we #safc

If we do sign Defoe and he scores 15 goals between now and the end of the season I couldn't give a toss what we pay him #safc

Daily Mail are saying it's a straight swap and we pay none of Defoe's wages.

This is a pretty good deal for us, right?

Depends on how much we are paying Altidore, if its 3-4M then its good, I also realize the cap hit is the same if it was higher.

Who knows what will happen next, we also might trade Altidore for a boat load of Garber bucks to Portland. MLS gives use a favour by unloading Defoe and we sign some other DP, however Bradley's comments would suggest he is our player going forward.

I don't think Altidore is a good fit, but if we rid our selves of Defoe and get a younger striker I can't exactly complain.

Ah fuck it, as long as we make the play-offs then I don't care what names are on the roster. No point in caring about that stuff anyway with deals like these.

why is he not a good fit? it's hard to see where he'd be a better fit quite honestly. And sign another striker? we have like 20 at this point don't we?

Now that we have Altidore I think it's safe to say at the very least Dike won't be with us come training camp.

lots of people reporting it as being done, all with the same figures. The Cunts, Daily mail, Toronto sun etc.

    Seems pretty done.

Altidore is younger and more durable. He has been an impact player at this level before. Yes, he would be overpaid, but so is Defoe, and Bradley for that matter. Defoe's salary is an impediment to MLSE's ability to recoup a moderate transfer fee, so this is a reasonable, viable option given the circumstances.

Altidore, Bradley, and Gilberto have the potential to be a dynamic force for us this season.

No, do, it isn't at all. That means we paid £4.5million for Altidore (pro rating Defoes transfer fee) and Defoe got a raise. On top of that, Altidore is a risk and far from the world class scorer Defoe still is. Altidore may rediscover a touch for us but the difference in class should mean cash coming to us. And we should be paying him way less than we paid Defoe.

2007 at the old meadowlands? oh yeah. one of Chris Pozniak or Marco Reda got sent off and Jozy walked through our defence for most of the game.

it doesn't matter if we pay him less than Defoe. He's still a DP. his salary whether it's higher or lower doesn't effect our budget whatsoever. Altidore might have had 1 in his last 40 in the PL for a terrible team, but Defoe had 3 in his last 33 for a much more competent Tottenham team. He'll be very good here if he comes.

Am I the only one who thinks we should also get a Sunderland Youth Team guy on loan until summer with Altidore?
Despite Defoe's contract, he's still worth more than Altidore.

Sorry, but I don't buy the "if it's over the cap it doesn't matter" argument about players wages. It is nonsensical - I know you aren't the only one who says it, but it doesn't add up to scrutiny for long. Remember, this club once sold a player and used the proceeds for a field. Overpay for a great fit, sure, but don't go crazy, because it handicaps you in lots of ways later. Like if you need to sell the player if it doesn't work out. And paying Altidore Defoes wages is crazy, just because MLS wants to bring US MNT players back.

I suppose I'll have to wait just a little while longer for that transfer fee before gloating.

As I said before I think the chances of Altidore working out are high. He will be overpaid though.

    As for Defoe, good riddance.

Looking forward to more tears from American fans. First their best midfielder, now their best striker. lol
