I stand corrected, now ESPN is saying the term will be eight years as well. Not sure if that's accurate or just reporters conflating the original use of eight years incorrectly (which happens all the time when reporters are given numbers to work with; editing budget copy can be nightmarish.)

It's accurate, Jeff Carlisle of ESPN is the one who first reported the length of the deal from what I can tell, and he's been putting out the best info throughout the negotiations. He tweeted it yesterday.

Hearing numbers like a seven-year deal, 15 percent increase in the cap and $60,000 minimum salary. #MLSCBA

So, that would put cap at $3,100,000 x 1.15 = $3,565,000. That's a bit lower than I hoped ($4M). Seven year deal timing is interesting, probably means next CBA will be done before next broadcast rights deal.

Ives Galarcep ‏@SoccerByIves 1m1 minute ago So #MLSCBA deal is done. Hearing lots of players unhappy w/final deal. I'm told 7 teams voted against it (KC, RSL, RBNY, NYC, MON, FCD, COL)

The Vice guy - note the narrative He's usually a baseball dude BTW. Already indicated he moves off of this topic once the CBA is done.

Jorge Arangure ‏@jorgearangure 32s32 seconds ago The owners were always going to win this. Will be interesting to see what happens with the union if there are lots of unhappy players

Sorry for the stream of conscioiusness stuff about all this, but the narrative of how this CBA occurred and will play out is going to be attempted to be written by all sides - and its looking like there are at least 6 sides.

if it increases by that amount each year then were looking at around $8m cap by end of CBA ($4m next year) Definetly not "top league by 2022" numbers

That would bring us roughly to what the English Championship is right now. Disappointing.

I would be shocked if it went up that much each year. I agree that isn't a leap to the next level, even if they throw in a new low end DP category.

Ives Galarcep ‏@SoccerByIves 7m7 minutes ago Sounding like 28-8 threshold held, but with slightly higher increase for players switching teams. Not full blown free agency but something

Ives Galarcep ‏@SoccerByIves 3m3 minutes ago
No word yet on CBA length. I'm seeing reports of 7 but am told players were fighting hard to keep it 5 years. Owners would LOVE 7-year CBA.

Ives Galarcep ‏@SoccerByIves 34s34 seconds ago

To clarify for anyone confused by earlier tweet, list of teams I tweeted was teams whose PLAYERS voted against accepting deal, NOT owners

Thankfully we won't have to go through this again for another 7 years. That was highly unpleasant. Now I guess I can at least begin to understand my poor hockey fan friends who went through a whole season getting scrapped + that half-season a few years back. That was my worst fear. VERY thankful! Game on!!

    I'm surprised actually..

I like the "free agency" concept in place My only concern is the reverse issue of what I hate about free agency... and that is owners using the increase cap being used against players. Now a player who may rightfully have deserved they can go to Europe but might have a hard time with a work permit, and an owner saying 15k increase not 50k.. don't like it.. talk to other clubs.. that is all you'll get.

My only issue. (Which is my whole issue with it.. players/agents in unrestricted driving wages up and GM/owners in this system screwing deserving players that in the previous CBA would have had more leeway.

Well I'm glad there is no strike but that's a pretty lame statement of intent for a league that says they want to be "among the best" in the next decade or whatever.

The legend of paper thin squads and millionaires passing to semi pros lives on.

Good to hear the CBA is finalized. I never believed we would have seen a strike or lock-out situation, but it's good to see everything locked-down and confirmed for the new season. I'm gonna have to wait until I see the details to see who got the better deal from it, though I think it's probably the owners. If the 7-year contract is true, that's a very long term to go before opening up negotiations again.
