    Hi Armen,

I understand. Way to much info about these players being close to signing. Is it possible you can correspond with Cathal through twitter or e-mail and see what he can share with you. Seems he has a lot of inside info. He was pretty confident about Defoe signing with TFC.

why would tfc give cathal any inside info..the guy writes crap stories about the club, he'd be first on my list of passing along my bullshit too just to screw around with his credibility

They'll leak him stuff when it suits their agenda because they know he'll print it and he has the biggest circulation. It's got nothign to do with respect for his integrity or skill.
However, I'll point out again that he claimed no sources in the Gilberto story; it reads quite specifically like a commentary on the tweet from the Brazilian journalist to me.

One more sleep and then we'll be allowed to announce stuff, surely.

    Maybe next week.

He rarely if ever claims sources. He's a columnist and thinks he doesn't have to.

Sort of getting sick of these two already, when we don't know the story, we don't know how committed they will be.

    "On the verge"
    "seriously considering"

Fuck off, if you haven't decided yet dont bother packing your bags. It reeks of just wanting to push the payday higher.
Never mind if they come over and get abandoned up top.

Leiweke needs to seriously answer a question... Playoffs or what?
You promised them, and we've been there, so put something up to show you're serious.

    Playoffs...or.... What?
Refund? Free tickets next season? Explain to me why you thought promising something you can't possibly back up was a good idea.
I don't get it, am I the only one who thinks he's stuck his foot further down his throat then Payne did?

Guangzhou Evergrande is going to take a swipe for Gilardino, they have the money to spend. Who knows how much money they'll offer him. C'mon TFC speed things up get Alberto to sign on the dotted line so at least I can see him play

    Can somebody please confirm something?

When are TFC and European teams allowed to announce signings? My understanding is it was January 1st for European but Jan. 6th for MLS?

The international window doesn't open until January 1st, so nothing is a done deal until then. Even if the players are set on signing with the team, things may still fall through, so nothing will be announced until everything is signed and sealed. Noy sure about the January 6th thing. I haven't heard anything about that, but must just be inner-league deals

    BPL...
What are the exact dates of the transfer windows? Why those dates?
The summer window officially runs from July 1-August 31, but English clubs can strike deals from June because the season has ended. The winter window starts from January 1 to the end of the month.

The summer date was adopted because it mirrored the UEFA deadline for registration of players for its competitions.

I don't think they can announce anything until we are closer to Jan 1st. We probably do have at least 1 signed by now.

This team would go alot further if it just kept its "grandiose" plans secret and went with just whats expected, which is to go after Canadian internationals to fill its core group. This is literally year 8 of the expansion plan. Enjoy the song and dance.

Who were the big name DP's on display in the MLS Cup today? (none) - so why do we need them for success? What if Defoe tears a knee up in Foxboro? Why do we still need four players plus the DP(s)???? Mariner said we needed 4-5 players, so what is the difference now? I hope I am wrong, but this all makes me very very nervous. Obviously it would be great to have him and/or Gilardino, but without the other four new players we are in the same place we were with Frings and Danny K.

There should be a "DP-test" that managers make a mental note of before signing DPs.

    1. Will this DP be productive on the team?

    2. Will this DP make the rest of the team better?

    3. If this DP is injured, will the team be able to cope without him?

If the answer isn't all YES, then more work is required on the roster before signing a DP. Right now, TFC would fail the third criteria; if Defoe/Gilardino do sign and then they are injured, does Toronto FC have adequate cover for that spot? Not anymore; we've gotten rid of Earnshaw. More work is needed on the squad.

If we have two DP strikers it's not going to be a big deal if one gets injured. And Dike is a better third striker than Earnshaw. But anyway, Bez said they've made an offer to Earnshaw, up to him to accept it.

Of course the team needs more than two strikers to be successful. Just because we only hear about the DP names doesn't mean the FO isn't working on cheaper players too. But I don't get why people keep talking about DPs like they're a different species. In MLS all that matters is finding players that are worth their cap hit. DP or not, they just need to contribute.

I totally agree with this point. My concern is, the best teams in MLS build their squad then strategically add a DP or two, if needed. We are doing it the other way around, which is very risky. To get the four or five MLS veterans we still need, The Tims and RN need an incredible eye for talent. Not something we have seen that often with TFC - getting rid of Plata and Soolsma then saying we have no wingers is only one example. Silva and Cronin another. Etc.

Any pre-contracts for a Bosman free agent can not be announced earlier than 6 months prior to end of expiring contract.

Assuming TFC's targets aren't in that category, yes a transfer announcement can be made earlier if the player's current club has resigned itself to the sum offered. And you're right, no official incoming players until MLS opens the gate.

But I've said this before, Daniel Levy at Spurs is a good businessman. He won't sign anything before the window opens...if there is even a crumb of interest elsewhere and the chance to jack the price up in January. It is possible, however, he is already taking multiple offers. I just don't think it likely. In 30 days the desperation levels of other clubs will be higher than they are currently.

I also think that applies to Genoa. Unless they truly believe the MLSE offer is the best they will ever see...why not wait? Genoa needs all the cash it can get.

    Survival of the richest.

This is not really true. RSL clearly built around Morales and Saborio. Same with LA and Donovan and NY/Henry.

My whole point is that we shouldn't think of DPs as separate from the rest of the roster. If we have a hole on our team and the best option happens to be DP then sign him. This isn't like having a baby where you want to make sure you're at the perfect place in your life before you commit. If we find a player who will make our team better and is worth the cap hit, then bring him in right away.

I don't get this whole idea of waiting until we have a core in place before signing a DP. The DP is PART of the core.
