Alberto Gilardino is a great player, but he plays a true CF game, and physically he is not what he was. He would be great, but he could be out alot.

I hope they get cracking, take the positives from the first half and get a damn game or two for November. I realize that there are countries holding their breath about qualifications but that should be over with. Looking at what's gone before it points to a preference of away games. I'll take it if they're only online but get the dates.

I dunno... it's very hard to tell who is going to be the best player down the road. Take Osorio for example, he was completely off the radar 16 months ago or so.

The things we need the most can't explicitly be handled by the nats. We need to start developing more players, and better ones.

But if we don't let the few who have shown some promise develop, they will stay in a stagnant state. As sad as it may be, certain players need to start being weaned away from the national team. I just don't think that in 3 years, a 35 year old but full of experience DeGuz is going to start over a 24 year old Osorio in the middle of the park. Get the kid some experience playing as well as others and see what will happen. It's what exhibition games are for. What was our average age for the strikers dressed for the game? Will they be around in 3 years time?

It's tough to say but the deros, humes, and deguzmans can't be considered starts anymore. They need to be there to help transition but at some point you just have to put the old dog out of its misery

I'm not of the opinion the national team can develop players. The programs are too short and it can't hide too many shortcomings at the club level. We've tried this type of thing before. Masiah Wassey, Eddie Sidra, more recently Matt Stinson, etc... None of these guys are in the picture right now or contributing to the program.

I'm fine with getting guys like Osorio and Tiebert as much PT as possible. That actually makes sense because they are our best young players and they've established themselves at the pro level. Guys who haven't established themselves or are very borderline professionals should not be taking up national team spots. It's far too speculative and destructive to the level of play on the field. It actually sets us back IMO.

I know the old guard is really old, but they still have a place. Partially because there is nobody else and partially because they need to keep the level of play up for everybody.

Me and you are thinking the same way. I guess I wasn't the clearest. I agree that the national team isn't the place to develop. What I'm saying is take these younger pro's (Osorio and Tiebert) and give them regular starts. We have a lot of talent coming up that are a year or two away like Petrasso and Carreiro. These two are probably a year or two away from featuring but it is important that they attend the camps to get their feet wet. When they are ready to be there, it wouldn't be so hard since they would have a bit of training experience with the rest of the team. You don't want to burn these guys to young but at the same time, you need to give them experience. It's a catch 22

I sort of figured we were on the same page. Damn internet trying to get everybody to argue with each other!

The last crop of U-17s are encouraging, hopefully that continues as they climb up the ladder. I agree, nothing to lose by bringing people to camp but I'd still keep the playing time very tightly held.
