Swansea and QPR are too good examples of recent Premier League stadia with the same capacity as MLS.

Swansea stadium is terrific.....and the city not exactly a world economic giant, but everyone pulled together to get it done. I could only dream of us having anything similar. (and a team the like to go with it)..

In any country where footy is the main sport, any city with just 300,000 pop has a stadium of around 30,000 capacity. I'm not talking about the countries with the 15 best leagues, just any country which is not considered a third world country.
Of course in US and Canada this may happen just in the next 100 years, if ever, and never to cities with just 300,000 pop, maybe triple of that, lol...
You're probably right, the people spending the money on stadiums feel that it will be at least twenty years before soccer needs bigger stadiums. Still, this is much better than it was and it's better to slowly build a solid base. When the NFL and AFL merged in the 60s they were so far behind baseball (and even smaller than college football) no one expected it to become the most successful league in the US. Who knows, the same could happen with MLS.

Great for them.. and looking at the area I understand the cost point.. there is an electrical sub station that needs to be moved in order to fit the stadium in the space they want to put it in.

Hiring Populous to do the final design is a great decision in my opinion. Biggest firm around for a reason. For folks who are unfamiliar with the company's name....for years they were known as HOK Sport.

Seems a trend in MLS to go with this firm.

AEG also has a long-standing relationship with them. Here's hoping TL pushes them on MLSE. Nothing against BMO's previous designer - BBB and SCI who are hired by MLSE regularly - but Populous is a step above.

Yes these both looked familiar to me as well but I think braga is a 30,000 seater while national is much smaller in scale (12000?). But in a really cool spot looking over the water. Even the airport runway comes out over the water if I remember. Oddly both clubs and stadiums part of birminghams European adventure a couple seasons ago.

nacionals backdrop definitely hits the mark like many mls stadiums from the first wave of SSS. I guess that is a thing of the past with the focus on roofs although philly's has one of my favourites!

Happy that there is another quality stadium being added, i just wish they could also eliminate all the plastic pitches (3 remaining now).

The Aviva Stadium is an amazing stadium. I've been lucky enough to go there for a soccer game (Man Utd vs An Irish League XI). Obviously a friendly, but it was good fun. DC's new stadium looks like its going to be a beaut, and I will look at heading down to DC for an away game once that is open

The limited seating end is because of houses being in the way in a heavily built up area, not because of design choice.

I'd say that right now, the design of the roof is BMO Field's last best option for creating a really good look for the stadium. We can't do much about the stands and administrative buildings - they're already built and I don't see the club investing in a redesign for them. But TFC has a chance now to really make the place look classy by putting up a good, strong, and well-designed roof.

Complete aside, but I would just like to point out that Porter flies to Dulles which is much further from DC than National (Reagan), which is where Air Canada flies. Choose wisely....

Similar to Chicago. Their Chicago direct is not O'Hare but Midway.

I had a lovely flight earlier this year.

But thanks for the heads up and I'll plan accordingly.

Great news for the DC Supporters & the MLS as a whole...

I've been twice to DC to see TFC / United and both times the supporters were fantastic and welcomed us to their awesome tailgate... I hope & trust the club will take care of these guys/gals well...
