Could TFC do the following :

Go around to countries like Greece, Colombia, Mali, Cameroon etc. Sign top U21 players to the academy and 'trial' them. Then who they like they can bring up to the senior team as 'homegrown' and not count towards cap hit.

You really wouldn't have to do all that much scouting if you went with quantity over quality for trialists, question is : would any transfer fee hit our cap and what do we need to make someone 'homegrown?'

Salary cap won't be a problem as long as NYCFC is the one team that's paying for the bills for the rest of the teams. It will be no different than Major League Baseball.

As far as I know, the player has to be with the academy for at least 1 year prior to signing a homegrown contract. A team is also allowed only 2 of these signings per year.

Homegrown signings are just a way of signing players to their first professional contract. Basically, if they've spent a year with your development program, you can sign them. If not, they have to go through some kind of allocation process. Also you seem to be under the impression that HGs can be paid a big chunk of money and it doesn't count against the cap. That is not the case however. HG's get contracts similar to draftees. The team can sign up to two of them per year to deals similar to GA, meaning similar salaries and salary rules. The rest of them don't count against the cap because they don't make enough to occupy a top 20 roster spot, not because of some special DP like designation.

So to answer your question: yes we could do what you said. But they would have to be willing to play here and make a small salary, which means they aren't likely to be any better than a greek/colomian/malian/cameroonian who has signed a professional contract. The only difference it would make cap-wise is that the non-professional player wouldn't command a transfer fee whereas a player who is on a contract would command a transfer fee.

Much appreciated, I had thought that HG players automatically sat in bottom 10 so as not to occupy one of the 20 roster spots but if it just because of Salary I get it.

Still, saving the transfer fee could be a lot of money as that has to be figured into your salary cap over the length of the contract. IIRC Plata was costing us over $200k last year b/c of transfer fee.

Seems to me that as a long term plan it may be better than scouring local house leagues for players.

A club may sign a player to his first professional contract without subjecting him to the MLS SuperDraft if the player has trained for at least one year in the club’s youth development program and has met the League’s Homegrown Player criteria. Players joining MLS through this mechanism are known as Homegrown Players.

There is no limit to the number of Homegrown Players a club may sign in a given year.

ExtraTime Radio addressed this on the last show. There's going to be a new CBA before NYCFC debuts in 2015 so there's a good chance it's going to be directly looked at.

If they only have to reside in the area for a year, we wouldn't have had to use our draft picks on Bekker and Welshman
