I actually thought Larson's article was fair. He went out of his way to find positive things to talk about in terms of how individuals are doing overall. His take on that game was bang on.
I find his writing style doesn't work for me, but I think he gets too much stick around here. I think people went overboard with the "he 's Mariner's shill" stuff. But now he's a negative nelly!

As my american counterpart who heads up our chicago office put it so succinctly . . .
Torontonians are bred to complain. You're EXPERTS! most small talk is dominated by negative sentiment, from weather to sports.
God help you if the jays or Leafs ever actually win anything. . What on earth will you do!
I'd go as far to say that the reason the leafs are so profitable and popular is that it is one of the best sources for griping, and moaning and bitching"
I'm a die Hard TFC supporter. . .
LOL! Doubley so, You suck!

NOTICE: Wager with STB: OVER 2 shots on goal in the First half wins a Pint at HT.
Please elaborate. It's well known he was friends with Mariner.

Larson says:
Actually, they look mid-table because they tied Philadelphia in their first match. Larson is reading way to much into the quote.“We look like a mid-table MLS team right now,” he quipped, as if to say the Reds were woeful for the better part of an hour here Wednesday night.

MLS is a tough, physical league, that emphasizes speed, and features plastic fields, grueling travel, extreme weather, and incompetent refs. - NK Toronto
I think Kurt's biggest issue is he sets himself a narrative then goes all out to support it and see it come to fruition, he's not the only guy covering TFC with that issue though
I am speaking only to the quality of his reporting. I don't care about his relationships.
I too felt he was being too optimistic in the second half last year, but it wasn't that egregrious. The reaction here was over the top.
I found today's piece to be very fair and balanced.

I just get the impression that all Toronto journalists are pretentious miserable bastards. Larsun is probably on the lower end of that spectrum though.
just so i get this straight...the complaint is that a journalist is too negative???
lets see...we have never made the playoffs, we are on our 8th manager, the team looked poor in both games so far, yet a journalist is not supposed to be 'negative'. oh, and to cap it all off, this site was complete poison to mariner (and for good reason)....but by god, if a journalist dares to write something negative about TFC, its time to crucify.

What really ticks me off is not being able to see more pictures of Nicole.
Can we get back to the kate upton / Keira knightly sandwhich please? Yummmm....
My problem with him generally isn't the one-note narrative. That's sort of endemic to where he works. My problem is that he doesn't seem to understand what's going on in the game. He praised Ecks' performance in that game, even though his night was a total failure. Part of that was that our three-man mid doesn't know how to read, react and cover a zone yet that is wider than normal, so he was caught high; but generally, he was awful.
His report on the first game had columbus "pinging around passes" and controlling the game in the first half, when in reality they had own-end possession and created nothing.
In simplifying the narrative, he "torques" or oversells angles; if you can write well, you don't need to conflate.
Having said all of that, the pressures there to produce volume copy can be brutal sometimes, so I'm not without sympathy. And does the job in covering angles better than most.
Other than being overly positive about Mariner, I don't mind Larson. Unlike most that cover the team, at least he has some knowledge of the game.

Interesting story of how Barca youth player came to play for SKC. You may remember him scoring on TFC before lol. And his gf is hot
“Years have gone by and I’ve finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar for good football.
I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’
And when good football happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don’t give a damn which team or country performs it.”

With the news of Nadir stepping down as CEO of Rogers, I'm kind of worried what impact it will have on the MLSE board; Rogers has finally shown their willingness to pay for talent with what they've done for the Jays, and MLSE was willing to take on Rudy Gay's contract... I can only hope the board continues its boldness going forward, and starts to bring in talent to the Leafs and TFC with the same intent; TFC especially with DP contracts expiring next year
I agree with the narrative thing. These guys put their flag down and then continually scrap to defend their stance. When all is lost they incrementally change what they say and weasel their way out of it.
Mariner is the man! > Mariner needs more time > we'll never know if he was a good manager or not > support mariner? Where was that said?
The lack of football knowledge doesn't bother me too much about anyone. Think most media types around the world are on shakey ground in that regard
