Se,let me try to understand this one.

We have HEALTHY CBs(two actually),but Mariner will play Eckersley out of his position and keep actual CBs on the bench while both of them are better CB then Eckersley.

Eckersly is better at RB but Cann hasn't proved he is back in his form from his days paired with Nana. Again, I'm more concerned about O'dea's form.

I'm sorry, when has Cann been given a chance to demonstrate that he isn't back in form?

Mariner played Cann for 45 mins on June 16. His next game was 2 months later, granted partly due to injury, on Aug 15th for a full 90. Mariner then used him a third time on August 25th for 1 minute. Grand total, 136 minutes. Today's date is October 18

Is this how Mariner wants to allow guys to play for their spots for next year? Not even counting the fact that he has only made 11 of 18 available subs in the last 6 games.

Funny. I have more excitement knowing that we're going into the offseason.

Williams was also great during the first couple of months last season before his injury. The only thing I had against him is that he would always boot the ball long. I'm not sure how that would be a problem under Mariner though. Maybe he hasn't recovered his cannon foot since his injury so he can't kick it far enough for Mariner's liking

Man, two days later and that loss does not sting any less. Pretty disgusted with all involved with the program ( players, coach, CSA executive).

I didn't expect to win, but getting crushed like that was like an instant flashback to every failure, missstep, and setback of the MNT.

People seem to be side stepping it in all sorts of different ways, but it's the same theme I've seen every year since I've followed the nats: the association has failed us. Doesn't matter what area you trace it back to, they are responsible.

These people should be operating every day with a gigantic fire under their assess... They are as complacent and lathargic as ever before. The 'reforms' and 'we sacked the CSA' tag lines are a load of shit.

I may have not been watching Williams long enough, but when I paid attention to him, he was using medium range passes keeping the ball on the ground, and he did this pretty well. I still can not believe that we keep healthy [inexpensive] Jamaican international CB on the bench. I also see more quality and future potential in him than in Cann.

Sounds like Mariner has already written him off. With any competent manager, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and think they'd seen enough in training to know, but I don't give Mariner that much credit. More than likely he is lining up a replacement from Bermuda...

I would have liked to see Mariner give Cann some MLS games to get fit and show what he can do. The end goal being to mainly use the MLS games that are meaningless now to get Cann fit for the CL, so we could have two natural CB's and have Ecks back in his natural role

EDIT: Forgot we also have Williams as well.

That line from Mariner about playing for spots is the latest BS he's feeding us. Ever since he told us the team only needed small tweaks - then shipped out a number of players and switched from the 4-3-3 possession based system to 4-4-2 long ball, I believe nothing he says.

Ya, this makes no sense at all... If we were in a playoff race, and Mariner didn't rate Cann at all, and wanted to send out what he thinks is his strongest lineup, then fine that's his perogative...

But the game is meaningless stat-wise, we have healthy centre-backs, one who wants to earn his shirt, and he plans to play Ecks out of position to keep said player on the bench...???

    STUPID F'N DECISION!!!

O'Dea has been nothing short of worrying and a disapointment...

Maybe I expected too much, and I don't want to give up on him - but I am hoping for more, SO MUCH MORE, from him next season...

Nope. Part of his salary would use allocation money to not exceed DP cap.

Considering just how shambles TFC has been all season, hard to rate anyone fairly. I still think given a better, more stable group of defenders to work with, and that really is just one CB away, O'Dea will be better next season. Though his performance (and Ireland in general) vs Germany is hardly a point in his favour.

I'm giving him some more time. O'Dea was not playing regularly before he came. Players get better the more real games they put in. I'm going to hold my opinion until mid season next year. By then it will be very clear what we bought.

Does Trap picking O'Dea over other Irish CBs taken into account? I find it fascinating that Trap rates O'Dea, who is playing in a perceived shitty league

With his penchant for playing players out of position, perhaps Mariner could utilise O'Dea as a striker - he scored against the Faroes, after all.

O'Dea is waht I expected him to be, a better centre back than what we have but not someone who made the defence any better overall. He's the best CB we have (not saying much) but a veteran who can walk the younger 3 through games was what we were crying out for.

I think we need Quillan Roberts in there to score some goals. Since Mariner is so well-liked in the league, maybe he can get a special exception to use Roberts as a pinch kicker, sub him in momentarily whenever TFC needs to take a free kick. Especially if the free kick is in our own end.

bah! no way someone like Frings gets a spot in Mariner's dream lineup. He reads the game to well

Ok, then requires the use of allocation money to pay down his cap hit so it is lower than a DP instead of being able to use that allocation money more effectively.

I don't think anyone in Ireland rates Trapattoni or agrees with his decisions. I believe he has also fallen out with with his other CB options.
