    Toronto FC shuffles the deck
by Ridge Mahoney, Tuesday, Jul 15, 2008 7:00 AM ET
[MLS] Regardless of where their team winds up in the MLS standings, Toronto FC's managing duo of John Carver and Mo Johnston has set the pace regarding recent transactions. Filing discovery claims on strikers Paul Dickov and Darren Huckerby before anyone else yielded a contract with Dickov and a trade with San Jose for the rights to Huckerby, for which TFC received allocation money and an international player slot.

    Here is the article ...

Regardless of where their team winds up in the MLS standings, Toronto FC's duo of John Carver and Mo Johnston has set the pace regarding recent transactions. Filing discovery claims on strikers Paul Dickov and Darren Huckerby before anyone else yielded a contract with Dickov and a trade with San Jose for the rights to Huckerby, for which TFC received allocation money and an international player slot.

According to a source, Dickov has signed an 18-month deal that will pay him approximately $500,000, which means he'll earn the maximum salary or close to it next year, and about half of that for the remainder of this season. His acquisition is expected to be announced Tuesday, or as soon as there is a roster slot available. TFC waived Andrea Lombardo last week but still needs to trim a player to make room for Dickov.

Toronto also still holds the rights via allocation to Brian McBride and has yet to conclude a deal by which it will trade him to Chicago, which is where he wants to play. He will be eligible to play Tuesday, when the U.S. secondary transfer window opens, and no one would be surprised if, sooner or later, MLS instructs TFC to either put McBride on its 18-man roster, trade him, or lose its allocation claim to him. This is a single-entity league, remember.

In the allocation process, teams are ranked in reverse order of results in the past 30 games - when the allocation claim is filed -- and have the option of claiming an available player, or passing. Toronto moved into the top spot when San Jose, at the top of the list as an expansion team, recklessly chased former Rapids striker Peguero Jean Philippe, who arrived from Scandanavia with bad knees, suffered internal knee derangement, and is on season-ending IR.

Though he's 35, Dickov is a pesky, relentless forward who adds yet another dimension to a TFC attack that already features speed (Jeff Cunningham) and strength (Danny Dichio) up front, and myriad midfield talents in wingers Rohan Ricketts and Laurent Robert, playmaker Amado Guevara, and central linkmen Maurice Edu and Carl Robinson.

"but still needs to trim a player to make room for Dickov." Cunny's gone! I have a feeling he will be released rather than traded, unless MO pulled some crazy stunt by combining McBride rights and Cunningham for a player. hmmmm... (just speculating)

The Huckerby deal with San Jose added another international spot, so Smith won't need to be dropped down ... and it's likely that Cunningham will be dealt or waived in order to create a spot for Sukur if that deal gets done.

Only prob is that international spots dont necessarily add room to a full 18 man roster (unless im over looking something...)

International spot, but not roster spot. We still only have 18 senior roster spots.

    Edit: Oss, you're right.

If Dickov signs, Smith will be moved to the developmental roster

If someone else signs (Sukur) or we get a player in a trade (for McBride), then Cunny is gone bye bye!!

Whoops, looks like this first part got covered twice over. Heh. For the umpteenth time, the issue is NOT international spots, the issue is that we need to clear up room on the Senior roster. We have 18 senior roster spots, which are all full. There is not way to increase this cap on senior roster spots, you can just trade for an international designation (which allows more people on your roster to be international, doesn't allow more people on the roster).

I think we'll see Cunningham get waived (no one would want his salary in a trade for anything remotely useful, although getting anything at all would be a fleecing), and Smith moved down to SD again. If Smith doesn't get moved then who knows what will happen. It will be an interesting few days.

I wonder if Smith will have to be "relegated" back to the rookie dressing room if his roster status changes?

There are definitely two dressing rooms, but I believe Smith was moved up a dressing room while he was still a dev contract, so I don't think contract has anything to do with it.

Mabe Mo should try and get Conde and a pick for McBride. It looks like we have some offensive options now. We could use a little more competition for defensive spots.

I couldn't find the link, but at the beginning of the season Morgan Campbell wrote in his blog about how Carver had split up the players dressing room so that developmental players had their own room, from which they could be "promoted" to the senior room.

Jarrod Smith was the first player to make that jump after getting some decent playing time.

In the item, Jim Brennan was cited as saying such a division of quarters was common in England.

    Cunny's gone.

We've used the latest moves to free up room for Dichov and Sukur. Probably Smith goes back to the dev, unless a trade is coming involving someone else (maybe a defender).

I might get flak for this, but if we need to drop a senior international spot, then Marshall is the next choice for me.

Allocation money + an international spot through 2013. So we did. I stand corrected. Looks like we only need to cut Cunny loose.

^^ International spot, we still have to free the actual ROSTER spot. Currently, we have 18 men on an 18 max roster. To bring two people in, two people have to go.
