Default Toronto FC Should Sign Michael Owen

This is the type of headline we need to see. We've never had a marquee player other than DeRo, and after 5 years of seeing a conveyor-belt of journeyman mid-level players on our forward line, we deserve it.

Owen is definitely past his best, but so are Beckham & Henry and they have made significant impacts on their MLS teams.

Despite never being a regular first teamer at United in his three years there, he always did the business and hit the back of the net when Fergie played him (in both Champions League & Premiership).

That said - even at 32, Michael Owen has a top strikers instincts and would score for fun against MLS quality defenders.....and we have never had a reliable goal scorer at TFC, EVER.

So come on TFC - you keep saying how much you value your fans, it's time to put your money where your mouth is and get us a player we can get excited about when the teams run out at BMO.

I thought it was serious for a second....but it would be interesting to get Michael Owen, but I still think we need more quality players in the backline (despite Henry playing fantastically recently).

I've edited your thread title, that was designed to falsely get attention.

Put yourself in Owens shoes. Which team (LA, Seattle, NY or TFC) would you want to go to?

Whoever pays me the most, personally. Spend the other 7 months of the year with all of that money, and live wherever you want.

Well, just read a tweet from Rio wishing him well wherever he goes. So he's looking obviously.

Owen is too stuck up for this city.

The only way he'd play for us is if he could live in NYC and then take a private jet to and from the stadium for training.
Oh and you know that parking lot that you guys like to tailgate in..well that is now his private jets landing runway.

ha ha - comparing Owen to Beckham and Henry.

    You're having a larf.

Besides, there's no way he'd fit into Aron's system.

What, isn't the MLS cup the sought after prize of all footballers worldwide?

    Really though, good point!

How about a winning seasons first. We never had a winning season, that concerns me 100 times more then we never had a big name player, I would argue that Frings is one, but I understand. I just to not care. WIN. That I care about.

If a pay for play deal was possible - yes. Since it is not, no.

Not happening, he's not even considering the english championship...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18101799

"The Championship is not an option," he said. "I'd like to think I haven't lost the ability to score goals at the highest level.

I met him once at Manchester airport and he's a really humble bloke. Such a shame that a player of his quality was riddled with injury. Though I would welcome him to Toronto, I can't see him moving here personally, he'd probably join LA or NY for the lifestyle. He doesn't need the money, and would see a move to the MLS as a retirement type thing.

And also, let's not rule out a move here because he dismissed the Championship. The perception of the MLS in Europe and particularly Europe is that it's below the quality of the Championship. Sorry to say it, and I don't agree with it, but that's the truth. A couple of post-season articles from N.America based journalists beefing this league up are far removed from the actual image portrayed over there.

Yeah, but Stoke isn't New York. He may have said he didn't want to play in the Championship, but he meant that he didn't want to play for Stoke.
