OPTA Spotlight: Examining TFC's defensive struggles - http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/articl...sive-struggles

beat me to it, i was going to post it.
great article with analysis to breakdown the issues.
Interesting and bleak analysis by Toronto Sun TFC beat reporter Kurt Larson on a Salt Lake podcast:
The podcast is called On Frame-4-23-12: I think it starts at the 40:00 minute mark or so. He is pretty much on the mark with what he says. Sad but True.

Doesn't sound like he's TOO impressed with the CCL run. I wish he'd have a chat around here.
Thanks for the link. It was a very interesting interview. Larson doesn't sound too impressed with Winter and the ESPN guys definitely aren't.
They really feel that Winter lacks tactical awareness.
FYI interview starts at 48 minutes gone ... Thanks for that, that is the best TFC related on air interview I have heard in a long time.
"There are some people who might have better technique than me, and some may be fitter than me, but the main thing is tactics. With most players, tactics are missing. You can divide tactics into insight, trust, and daring." - Johan Cruyff
best tactical analysis piece I've seen on MLS ... what, ever? Probably.
When we avoided these exact issues against Santos and played compact in the back but direct, we looked really good. I really thought they'd stick with that 4-3-3, four at the back, and headmannign through the hole player and the target forward, but they went back to the 3-4-3, which was a strange, strange decision.
Maybe they just suck tactically. You can be mechanically schooled in something but not able to see why it is or isn't working. Although anyone who can't figure it out from those stats should probably just get the front lobotomy and finish the job.
It's not just the defensive end. We're pretty shit at the offensive end too, as this fantasy manager stat breakdown shows:

Other than retaining Plata and Eckersley, TFC's off-season moves have been an absolute failure.
Larson has quite a few damning statements in that interview. Really embarrassing for the management team.
