I think Hume can still make more money in Europe unless Mo Johnson comes back to the club and offers him DP money for being Canadian.

I like Hume, but i doubt he'd take less money to play here.

Preston is a first division team. I doubt he makes that much now.

But that's my point, it's not just about defending Koevermans.

And while they may have trouble defending him ... our overall record suggests they don't have too many problems with the rest of our roster.

Really? We've never seen Aceval, Harden, Emory or anyone else get cut out with a through ball and struggle for pace to catch their man. I'm calling BS on that one.

Mellberg ranked 40th among all players in CASTROL's ranking, 18th (i think?) among all defenders in the tournament.

    Some things to note...

    - 2nd Highest rated Defender on team that didn't make it past the group stage (so even smaller sample size than the higher rated players, granted) (EDIT - Kadlec rated higher)

    - Highest rated player from Sweden... rated higher than Zlatan

    - Highest rated PLAYER of anyone from the Greek League

    - Played England and France in his group - based on the individual-based statistics measuring performance though, the impact may be minimal

While not an enormously large sample size, still, showcases what he brings to the table compared to some pretty amazing talents in world football

I saw Danny K cut through some garbage defending by Joseph in the last game... He does not have wheels on Shalrie, for sure. Sometimes through-balls expose crap positional defending and awareness, not always lack of pace.

They were a Championship side when he signed with them. He's played at that level almost his entire career, making that level of money that is probably hovering around DP amounts and probably not worth it for either side to pursue.

I don't disagree and I think you can still be a good defender without having pace. I just think if we have too many players in the squad without pace it will create issues.

    I'll leave it at that.

With Harden, Aceval, ect, remember, we played a crazy high line with a slow, positionally bad defense. We then did nothing to retain possession in the midfield and nothing to pressure the oppostion in the midfield, giving them plenty of time to place passes behind back line. That was tactical suicide IMHO.

Just because those guys in that system got burned does not mean that these guys would. They will sometimes, but you have to adapt the tactics to cover for that.

Say what you want about what may be slower people in front of him, but i think the Euro's definitely showed Mellberg would bring a butt-tonne of positional shape to a back four that needs it, and that should translate into a solid D. I dunno about McKenna beside him, but i would agree he is an upgrade over everyone we have currently in the middle of the pack, and an improvement is still an improvement... They could team up quite well.
IIRC he scored two goals in that game. That probably had something to do with it

The problem with Aveval is that he isn't that good a quality CB, IMO! He doesn't read the game like a top pro, or even a MLS defender, and often finds himself VERY out of position.

Ecks also has the same problem at CB (getting out of position) and so does Emory - but they are both very good tacklers and VERY good off the mark, which sometimes makes up for being out of position. But Aveval is neither quick OR has positional awareness!

I'd love to see Hume here, but I doubt he would want to come here at this stage of his career. He would make an excellent replacement for Johnson (if we wanted/needed to replace him).

I'd like that as well, Hume seems to be more tenacious than any others on the CMNT.

This is NOT GOOD: Danny could be out 6 to 9 months because of a torn ACL:

According to Dutch media who spoke to Danny today or yesterday

I put this in the Koevermans thread, but, if the proposed CB signings go through, would that leave the club with some assets to trade for temporary help? I noticed that Le Toux moved to NYRB for Dane Richards. I know these are not the most prolific scorers, but they would certainly provide some short-term help.

I wonder what we could get for Ecks and Plata? Just a starting point...

    TFC need another goal scorer.

Relying on DK as our only reliable option in front of net is a recipe for disaster. And if he's out for a prolonged period of time, we're in serious trouble.

I've been saying for a while that they should stick with what they have at the back this season knowing the young players will gain valuable experience, and use their resources trying to find additional attacking options to make the product they put on the field more attractive to the fans.

Show people they can score now, and then add an experienced defender in the offseason once we have a more complete picture of what the young guys can and can't do defensively.

The irony is, central defence is actually not our biggest hole at the moment.

It's a hole, but it's a problem area where we have young players with potential who could improve.

At striker, we have DK and that's it. No other veterans who can score, and zero talent waiting in the wings.

We need to be looking to add firepower now, and then fill holes at the back in the Winter transfer window once we have a complete picture of what our young players can and can't do.

in my opion Aceval was just over anxious /eager and got himself to far out of position...I mean Nesta isn't fast but supposedly very high soccer intelligence..enabling great POSITIONING

Doing what? Watching the ball go over their heads to Johnson's left foot?

Midfield is not our need right now.

Del Piero is available. The two goals Beckham got this weekend off free kicks was what we would see regularly from this great Italian player. And, it would be a packed BMO every game just to watch him play.

Edu should have been made a DP years ago, perfect mls player, would have shored up our crappy midfield and enabled the team to build around a young, talented player. But he won't leave Europe.
