    Toronto FC In Vancouver
    Velez No Stranger To Swangaard

Toronto FC trained in Vancouver on Tuesday evening ahead of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship clash against the Whitecaps on Wednesday night (kick off 10:00 p.m. live on Gol TV). Playing at the compact Swangaard Stadium will be a new experience for many of the Reds squad, but defender Marco Velez knows exactly what to expect. Velez played for Puerto Rico Islanders in the United Soccer League before signing for Toronto, and is no stranger to games at Vancouver. "I've played at Vancouver many times," said Velez. "It's a smaller stadium, but they have good fans. It's a good environment to play in, and it's not quiet like most of the USL. They have a good fan base and will yell at you and make themselves heard. It should be a good experience."

Reds set for battle in B.C.
Head coach John Carver chats about the clash vs. Vancouver

Toronto FC return to action in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship on Wednesday night against Vancouver Whitecaps. Kick off is set for 10:00 p.m. ET. Reds coach John Carver said his players are "fired up for a battle."
"This game is even more important than the last game against Vancouver," said Carver. "We know what we have to do. To give ourselves a chance to get in the Champions League, we need to get something from the game. I'll not need to say too much to the guys, because they'll definitely be fired up."
Toronto were beaten 1-0 by Vancouver at BMO Field on Canada Day. Martin Nash scored a first half penalty to win the game and give the Whitecaps their first victory in the tournament. In the United Soccer League, Vancouver are without a win in their last five games.

    Academy through to U-17 semifinals
Reds beat Kansas City 3-1 to advance in SUM U-17 Cup

TFC Academy U16's are through to the semi finals of the SUM U-17 Cup in Colorado after a 3-1 win over Kansas City Wizards on Monday night. Ryan McLeod scored twice as the Reds maintained their winning run at the tournament to finish top of the group with three wins from three games. To watch highlights and reaction, click here. "We knew it was going to be a tough contest. Kansas City proved to be worthy opponents," said U16 Head Coach Stuart Neely. "Eventually our composure on the ball allowed us to take out some of their threats and let us put pressure on them. It was a windy day and I think we dealt with the conditions a bit better than them."

    White is the colour …

They aren't quite back to the glory days of Willie Johnston, Phil Parkes and the lads, but the Whitecaps huge clash Wednesday against Toronto FC of MLS shows they're on their way.
Because of a pair of 2-0 losses to fellow A-League squad Montreal, it's unlikely the Whitecaps will progress to the next stage of the CONCACAF Champions League.
But still, they're expecting a sell out against a glamour club from allegedly a league above. The MLS has bigger stadiums, it has Landon Donovan (guffaw), and of course David Beckham. The leap in quality isn't much at all, to be honest.

    Coaches at each other's throats

    Canwest News Service

    Published: Wednesday, July 09, 2008
TORONTO -- A war of words has emerged between Toronto FC coach John Carver and Vancouver Whitecaps coach Teitur Thordarson ahead of their crucial CONCACAF Champions League qualification match.
Carver said the Caps took liberties with his team's top players during the 1-0 Vancouver victory last week:
"Our flair players were eliminated as soon as they got in possession of the ball so I felt like we didn't get any protection [from the referee]".

The first-year Toronto coach wants the officials to handle the rematch in Burnaby differently:
"I just hope whoever the official is will be strong enough to deal with that and give us an opportunity to show teams what we can do."
Carver made the comments at his team's final training session. When word of Carver's criticism reached Vancouver later in the day, Thordarson hit back: "That's bull. He should just focus on his own way of playing.

    Carver hits out at officials
TFC coach wants his top players 'protected' against the Whitecaps

    Morgan Campbell
    Sports Reporter
Toronto FC hasn't even kicked off with the Vancouver Whitecaps yet, and TFC head coach John Carver is already beefing with officials.
Eight days ago at BMO Field Carver remained silent while his players ripped officials for questionable calls at crucial moments in TFC's 1-0 loss to Vancouver.
But yesterday Carver used the team's website to issue some pre-emptive criticism toward officials before tonight's Canadian Championship tournament match.
"I just hope we get some protection for our quality players," Carver told the website. "Their game plan when we played at home was obvious to everybody. Our flair players were eliminated from the game, and didn't get any protection. I just hope that the officials are strong enough to deal with that and see what is happening."

    - EDU IN MO-CAP: Toronto FC Star Maurice Edu donned a neoprene suit with light censors in EA Sports' motion capture studio in Burnaby yesterday. The former Major League Soccer rookie of the year worked his magic and will be featured on EA's FIFA 09.

More games in Canada -- that's the unanimous belief of the players representing our national men's and women's soccer teams.

Whitecaps fans have a task tonight as tough as the one facing their team.
They have been challenged to transform Swangard Stadium into a sea of blue for the Caps' Nutrilite Canadian Championship return duel against Toronto FC -- an effort to match, in some small way, the rabid, red scene that envelops BMO Field in Toronto on game days.

Ah yes, Fifa 09, the Canadian made soccer game that never features the Canadian national team. They should make Dichio a real face, he's the club hero not Edu.

I LOVE how Carver is working the refs through the media. Genius.

    And picking the perfect words.

We play a high-pressure game and I know they're not very comfortable with that. That's not our problem, that's their problem."
The Van coach is right there and has obviously done his homework.

Playing against DC and NE showed that. Whenever our defenders got the ball they would be swarmed by at least 2 players, a forward and a mid, with the other mids cutting off the passing lanes. If TFC can't figure out how to get around this they will not only have a tough time against Van, they will also be candidates for early exit in the MLS playoffs (providing they get there)

    COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!

Either find a quick pass route forward, or (try to) Move the the ball forward as a unit, without options that double-upwill work everytime.. . . barf the officials. . we need to take OUR game to them.

a nice early goal to quoiet the stadium would be a great start!

    WALK ON TFC!

    Cant wait for tonight.
NOTICE: Wager with STB: OVER 2 shots on goal in the First half wins a Pint at HT.

The key there is to have defenders who are alot more comfortable on the ball then we do. Try that high pressure shit on someone like Patrice Evra or Ashley Cole and you'll just watch as he skins ya and blows right by.

rewatching the Vanny at TFC game, it's not like Vanny destroyed them. First 15 minutes TFC dominated Second half was mostly TFC... the goal was a joke/fluke etc.

Vanny lost to Montreal in their own home... TFC can do this. I'd be more surprised to see the Shitecaps do it twice in a row.

    ^^ good perspective rocker.

As well, you know Carver's coming out with this to take the focus away from his players. Whether it unduly influences the officials tonight is another matter...

But then professionals should be above skewing calls based on what's said in the papers.

    Oh shit...

He was red-carded. He will miss the TFC-Fire match.

the biggest movement from the Cottagers' point of view has been captain Brian McBride's decision to rejoin the MLS with Toronto FC. Not a good omen considering how much the club missed him last campaign.
Saw this on ESPN Soccernet today, probably nothing, maybe just a case of the writer not understanding the McBride situation or me misinterpreting the phrasing, as it sounds kind of definitive to me.

so non-MLS games count in the discipline record?
I'm just wondering cuz it didn't count for TFC in the Canada Cup.

    My bad.
It will depend on MLS disciplinary committee for this one.

    Toronto FC, Whitecaps resume rivalry

Toronto FC needs a win. So do the Vancouver Whitecaps. And the Montreal Impact? They'll be rooting for the game to end in a tie.
