“Years have gone by and I’ve finally learned to accept myself for who I am: a beggar for good football.
I go about the world, hand outstretched, and in the stadiums I plead: ‘A pretty move, for the love of God.’
And when good football happens, I give thanks for the miracle and I don’t give a damn which team or country performs it.”
-Eduardo Galeano
Toronto is third, Vancouver is 4th.
Timbers, shelled out $2 million for Diego Chara, kinda makes you wonder what a guy like Dejan Stankovic is going for these days? I would settle for Ivan Cordoba also.
Agreed."Vancouver said, 'We're going to plug in four or five big-time players that are going to carry the rest of the team,' " Schaerlaeckens said. "In a league like MLS, it has long been demonstrated that that approach doesn't work. You need depth and breadth in MLS. You just can't get by with just a few big-money players trying to bail you out."
I know another team that has decided to go down this route.
lol.. De Guzman is 45% of our payroll. Sort of makes "average salary" a moot point when there's so much disparity in player wages.
Not really sure what conclusion the writer is trying to make other than Portland, a first year team trying to turn a profit, is getting reasonable production this year from low wager earners.
If the point is that big spenders don't have success, it is shame he didn't write the article last year when NY was doing well. Or it is shame that he didn't try to explain LA's success this year with their massive payroll.
Personally, I think the comments by the GM are a little disingenuous. His quote regarding starting young and keeping them together for 8-10 years raises my eyebrows. In a developmental league, is that a realistic vision to be selling? Salaries will have to rise if these players are worth keeping.
Sounds a little like a pre-emptive piece to protect their profits and ward off demands from their sold out fan base to open the wallets.
Ha, this comment from a reader sounds awfully familiar:
"This is what worries me most out the Timbers FO, running a team is a business. They know that no matter what product they put on the field people are going to be in the stands so there is no incentive to go out and hire a true DP. (dont play the 'loyalty to the city' card, this is professional sports.) I like what VAN is doing in terms of building around proven players, PDX has done very well this year with the 'scrap heap' they got from the draft but I hope they can get a proven name."
^ which reinforces exactly why I suggested that the comments from the GM in the article were "a little like a pre-emptive piece to protect their profits and ward off demands from their sold out fan base to open the wallets."
